Overview

The Exhibits & Interpretation Department develops and delivers engaging interpretive content that connects diverse audiences to the history and collections stewarded by the Ohio History Connection. The department's work spans exhibits, programs, publications, and digital platforms, all aligned with the organization's interpretive themes and commitment to inclusive, community-centered storytelling.
Working alongside the Interpretation and Content Specialist, this internship position will assist with historical research, interpretive writing, content development for exhibits and digital platforms, and public programming. The intern should be a curious researcher and clear writer who is comfortable translating complex history into accessible narratives for diverse audiences.
Responsibilities

Research and develop interpretive content, including exhibit text, labels, scripts, and educational materials, using primary and secondary historical sources.
Write and edit interpretive narratives that reflect diverse perspectives, particularly those historically underrepresented, for a variety of audiences.
Produce content for print, web, and multimedia platforms, and contribute to the department's content library of interpretive materials and reference documents.
Collaborate with curators, educators, and community partners to support the creation of engaging visitor experiences, and assist with interpretive program delivery across the site system as needed.
Required Education, Skills, Experience

Must be enrolled in an academic program OR a recent graduate from an academic program (within one year).
Majors in History, Public History, Museum Studies, English, and Communication are preferred.
Experience with Microsoft Suite and Google Products is required.

Demonstrates a potential to communicate well in written and verbal communications, including informal mediums like email and meetings.

Flexibility, enthusiasm, and an attitude of respect for working with diverse staff and visitors.
Other Position Requirements

Must complete a background check and onboarding paperwork.
Must create and account and log hours via Track It Forward.
Must attend professional development and intern meetings.
Education and Experience Outcomes

Knowledge of interpretive planning, content development, and best practices in public history.
Practical experience conducting historical research, writing interpretive content, and collaborating on exhibit or program development.
