ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom producing investigative journalism focused on California with national resonance.
We’re looking for driven reporters eager to take on compelling stories grounded in California. Candidates should pitch beats or industry areas that provide unique insight into the state’s policies, culture, and communities.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
Have at least a five‑year track record of producing investigative stories, ideally in California, and a vision for covering this state’s diverse communities.
Relish pursuing accountability stories that are both important and powerfully told.
Embrace and possess experience with a wide range of reporting techniques, from data analysis to creative reader engagement.
Bring an accountability lens to issues of the day through both quick investigations and longer projects that span months.
Enjoy collaborating within a highly collaborative newsroom, both internally and with external media partners.
Understand California’s unique issues and express a vision for the kinds of stories you would tell.
Be available to travel as needed for assignments, training, and staff meetings.
Full‑time position with benefits. Must be based in California (or willing to relocate). Eligibility to work in the U.S. required.
The expected salary range for this position is $100,000 to $160,000. This is a good‑faith estimate; final salary will consider experience, accomplishments, and location.
