Torrance Civic Chorale

is a program of the Cultural Service Division of the Torrance Community Services Department and includes the adult chorale program and jazz ensemble. Torrance Civic Chorale has provided the South Bay with exceptional choral music, instruction and cultural enhancements since 1961. With 70+ singers, the Chorale and Torrance Civil Jazz ensemble are sponsored by the Cultural Services Division of the Community Services Department at the City of Torrance. The group’s musical repertoire varies widely from the classics to pop tunes and Broadway musical to newly composed masterworks. Orchestras, bands, instrumental ensembles, and individual musicians are engaged to perform with the Chorale as needed.

The Instructor I assists the conductor in planning, reviewing, and rehearsing music. This position conducts selected rehearsals and pieces, plays accompaniment at sight for chorale and jazz ensembles, may warm‑up choirs, rehearse with professional music staff for performances, transposes music from one key to another, and records tracks for sections in the choirs as needed.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

Advanced piano playing;

Understanding of music theory, harmony, rhythm, composition, and transposition;

Knowledge of Popular, jazz and rock, musical theater, and classical music;

Knowledge of choral vocal techniques;

Knowledge of proper diction and foreign languages as related to musical pieces;

Hours: Mondays, 5:15–9:30 pm plus concerts, festivals, and additional rehearsals (which are all paid).

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills such as:

Five years of experience teaching the equivalent of four semester courses per year. Four of the five years may be substituted by possession of a relevant degree from a college, university, or specialized school. Significant recognized ranking in the field may be substituted for four years of the required experience.

Ability to read chord charts, improvise solos and accompaniments;

Memorize, improvise, adapt and transpose music;

Coach students individually or in small groups;

Select music suitable to various occasions;

Follow a soloist, a conductor, performing a musical score;

Work effectively and cooperatively with conductor and vocalists.
