Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Digital Media Commons and Makerspace supports the learning and curriculum goals of UNC Greensboro by providing dynamic spaces, equipment, training, and project consultations in photography, videography, podcasting, audio recording, sewing, 3D printing, and more.
Position Summary
The Department Manager provides strategic leadership, oversees operations, develops policies, and supervises staff to meet high-quality service standards. The role involves collaborating with library leadership, campus partners, and staff to grow programs, services, and technology.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in the area of assignment, with at least one year in a supervisory or lead-worker capacity; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be accredited.
Preferred Qualifications
Three years of experience working in an academic or public library.
Significant experience providing public/customer service.
High service standards across all interactions.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Independent and collaborative work ability.
Instructional design or workshop creation experience.
Experience with advanced or makerspace technologies and equipment.
Interest in technology application for research and learning.
Program development, management, assessment, and evaluation experience.
Ability to work with diverse disciplines and user groups.
Attention to detail and strong organizational, project, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
Training material development and documentation experience.
Departmental Management Responsibilities
Coordinate and direct Digital Media Commons and Makerspace operations to meet library service standards.
Oversee programs, services, technologies, and spaces, and participate in public service.
Serve on the Library Leadership Council, collaborating on planning, policy, budgeting, and departmental goals.
Implement library-wide strategic goals at the departmental level.
Use comprehensive knowledge of policies, procedures, and best practices to supervise multi-faceted activities.
Establish procedures for effective support of the university community and collaborate on issue resolution.
Address service barriers, interpret policies, and provide solutions for non-routine patron needs.
Create detailed program information and guidelines.
Collect, analyze, and use operational data to recommend and implement improvements.
Maintain confidential records per retention guidelines.
Coordinate offsite equipment repair and replacement; assess technology needs and order equipment.
Support desk coverage coordination and supply/order approvals.
Oversee the Tech Equipment Lending program and related cataloging and circulation procedures.
Assist with billing issues and fines related to lost or damaged equipment.
Employee Management Responsibilities
Manage FTE staff and student employees, handling recruitment, assignment, and scheduling.
Develop positive relationships among department employees.
Ensure high-quality, efficient service and adherence to policies.
Create work schedules and involve employees in strategic planning and policy development.
Train and supervise staff on operational policies and procedures.
Support recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of student employees and manage related wages.
Recommend staffing changes and enhance employee competencies.
Maintain compliance with HR, Payroll, and university regulations.
Programming Responsibilities
Collaborate with key personnel to create and maintain workshops and series.
Coordinate instruction, scheduling, resources, assessment, and delivery of workshops.
Safety, Security, and Facility Management Responsibilities
Oversee safety, security, and facility issues to ensure a safe environment.
Stay current with OSHA, state, and university safety practices.
Develop and conduct safety training for staff.
Report and follow up on safety and facility concerns.
Manage departmental evacuations and emergency situations.
Internal Communication Responsibilities
Partner with Library Development Officer for fundraising materials and analytics.
Communicate major or complex situations internally.
Interpret and apply program policies and regulations internally and externally.
Market DMC services and spaces to the campus community.
