Controls Engineer (Level 3)
Controls Engineers 3 are responsible for designing, developing, installing, and maintaining equipment used to monitor and control systems, machinery and processes. They work in various industries including industrial controls, water / wastewater, power controls and protection, and transportation systems. They are technical experts in advanced process control, instrumentation, distributed control systems, PLCs, and SCADA systems and use these skills to design and implement solutions for our customer’s complex needs.
Responsibilities
Design / Engineering
Originated design documents for small projects and supported large programs, including narrative design documents, requirements analysis, subsystem designs (CAD / panels / layouts / wiring / SCADA screens / hardware / communications), specifications, and performed QA/QC and technical reviews.
Planned and designed procedures and fixtures for integrated systems factory testing, and resolved internal/external comments.
Programming
Led programming / configuration team efforts for complex automation and SCADA applications.
Programmed, configured, and troubleshot PLCs, RTUs, and HMI systems.
Testing / Troubleshooting / Deployment / Commissioning
Authored testing and commissioning procedures and test reports; originated test procedures.
Commissioned deployed systems and developed test fixtures and simulation devices.
Performed factory and field testing.
Maintenance
Performed troubleshooting on service calls to existing and legacy system operators.
Performed hardware and software upgrades and replacements on existing systems.
Managerial Responsibilities
Estimates: Conducted surveys, inspections, tours of client sites; prepared cost estimates for small projects; assisted senior engineers in bid and proposal preparation; evaluated and priced change orders.
Personnel Management: Assigned technical tasks and coordinated with entry‑level engineers and technical staff.
Qualifications
Field Experience
Reading electrical and control schematics and plans.
Control system startup, configuration, and calibration.
Testing and troubleshooting control systems.
Basic electrical and machinist hand tools.
Testing, calibration, or industry‑specific tools and software.
Computer networks.
CAD/CAE Software (AutoCAD / EPLAN).
Standard office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.).
Core Requirements
Proficient in ladder logic and structured text programming.
Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex automation issues.
Proficient in designing, programming, and troubleshooting PLCs or DDCs on at least one platform: Siemens (SIMATIC), Allen‑Bradley (Rockwell Automation), Schneider Electric (Modicon), Tridium Niagara Framework, ABB (AC500, AC800M), Omron, KMC Controls, Johnson Controls Metasys, Honeywell WEBS, Johnson Control FX, Siemens Desigo/Apogee, Distech Controls, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, GE Intelligent Platforms.
Proficient in designing, programming, and troubleshooting SCADA solutions on at least one platform: AVEVA (InTouch, System Platform), Ignition by Inductive Automation, GE Digital (iFIX, CIMPLICITY), Siemens WinCC, Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk View, AVEVA (Citect SCADA), Intellution FIX32/HMI32, VTS Scada, AVEVA (OSIsoft PI) Historian.
Preferred Licenses / Certifications
Design Build Institute of America (DBIA).
Certified SCADA Security Architect (CSSA).
Certified Automation Professional (CAP).
Engineer in Training (EIT).
Certifications in PLC / Automation platforms (e.g., Schneider, Rockwell, Siemens, Niagara).
Certifications in SCADA platforms (e.g., AVEVA, Rockwell, Iconics, Ignition).
Education / Experience
Master's degree in electrical, automation engineering, or related field with 3+ years of experience.
Bachelor’s degree in electrical, automation engineering, or related field with 5+ years of experience.
Abilities
