AAAS has an exciting opportunity for a
Communications Associate
to join our SciPak team within our Editorial department.
This position exists to help promote and facilitate accurate coverage of the findings from the Science family of journals – specifically Science Advances, our highest volume journal – in the media worldwide. This includes serving as a liaison between authors of forthcoming papers and their affiliated press officers, across a range of time-sensitive questions, and some 7,000 journalists. Part of serving the latter group, journalists, involves recruiting, curating, and/or editing multimedia content that they can use in their stories. Another critical part of this role is the weekly “construction” of the press package – for Science Advances. They will also report back on media coverage metrics and article tracking.

What You’ll Do
Create a weekly embargoed Tip Sheet for press officers on EurekAlert!.
Communicate publication schedules, embargo guidelines, press package details, and provide press communications support for authors, press officers, and journalists.
Respond to a range of time-sensitive stakeholder (author, PIO, reporter) queries.
Collect and format PDFs for use by press officers and journalists.
Recruit, collect, and properly format multimedia content from researchers and their affiliated institutional press officers for use in the press package.
Create organizational documents for reference by the press package team.
Track multiple articles and their content across several issues.
Build and update the weekly press package on EurekAlert! and for distribution via email.
Support other press package team members in various efforts.
Coordinate with Editorial & Production staff to track changes in workflow, including related to volume.
Requires bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years communications experience.
Basic understanding of HTML, web design.
Basic understanding of Microsoft Office and Adobe programs – specifically Dreamweaver and Photoshop.
Ability to track and manage several articles across several issues.
Comprehensive understanding of press communications/media messaging.
Interpersonal and communication skills.
Group-oriented.
Organizational skills.
The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is between $55,000 – $58,000 per year. AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, and life insurance, each subject to the terms of the applicable program.
