Description
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Director, Marketing Communications & Public Information to lead the development, execution, and oversight of all organizational communications, branding, marketing, media relations, public information, and stakeholder engagement initiatives. This executive leadership role is responsible for shaping and protecting the organization's reputation while ensuring consistent, transparent, and impactful communications across all internal and external channels.
The Senior Director will serve as the organization's chief communications strategist, partnering closely with executive leadership to develop messaging that supports organizational priorities, drives public awareness, strengthens stakeholder relationships, and enhances customer engagement. The ideal candidate combines strategic vision with operational excellence and possesses extensive experience managing integrated communications, public affairs, media relations, crisis communications, digital marketing, and community outreach programs.
This leader will foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability while ensuring communication efforts effectively support the organization's mission, values, and long-term objectives.
Responsibilities
Strategic Communications Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy that aligns with organizational goals and supports business objectives.
Brand Management: Serve as steward of the organization's brand, ensuring consistency in messaging, visual identity, voice, and reputation across all platforms and stakeholder interactions.
Public Information & Media Relations: Lead proactive and reactive public information efforts, serving as the primary communications liaison for media inquiries, public announcements, and organizational messaging.
Marketing Strategy & Campaigns: Direct integrated marketing initiatives designed to increase awareness, engagement, customer satisfaction, and utilization of organizational services.
Executive Communications: Develop executive messaging, speeches, presentations, board communications, talking points, and strategic communications materials for senior leadership.
Crisis Communications: Lead crisis communication planning, preparedness, and response efforts, ensuring timely, accurate, and transparent communications during emergencies or significant events.
Community & Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with community organizations, government agencies, business partners, elected officials, customers, and other key stakeholders.
Digital Communications: Oversee website content, social media strategy, digital marketing, email communications, and emerging digital engagement platforms.
Internal Communications: Develop and implement employee communication strategies that foster engagement, alignment, transparency, and organizational culture.
Content Development: Direct the creation of high-quality content including press releases, publications, newsletters, annual reports, videos, presentations, and marketing collateral.
Research & Analytics: Monitor communication effectiveness, public perception, stakeholder engagement, and campaign performance through data analysis and reporting.
Budget & Resource Management: Manage departmental budgets, agency partnerships, vendor contracts, media spending, and resource allocation.
Team Leadership & Development: Recruit, develop, mentor, and lead communications, marketing, and public information professionals while fostering a high-performing team culture.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with departments across the organization to ensure communication initiatives support operational, customer service, and strategic priorities.
Compliance & Governance: Ensure communications activities comply with applicable regulations, public information requirements, records retention standards, and organizational policies.

Typical Qualifications
12 + years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, communications, public affairs, public information, media relations, or corporate communications.
7+ years of leadership experience managing communications, marketing, or public affairs teams.
Demonstrated success developing and implementing enterprise-wide communication and marketing strategies.
Extensive experience managing media relations, public information programs, crisis communications, and reputation management initiatives.
Proven expertise in brand management, strategic messaging, digital communications, content marketing, and stakeholder engagement.
Strong understanding of public sector communications, transportation, infrastructure, government relations, or regulated industry environments preferred.
Exceptional written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
Strong project management, budgeting, and organizational capabilities.
Experience utilizing data, analytics, and market research to guide strategic communication decisions.
Proven ability to influence organizational leaders and effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
Experience serving as an organizational spokesperson or managing high-profile public communications highly desirable.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field required.
Master's degree in Communications, Public Administration, Business Administration, Marketing, Journalism, or related discipline preferred.
Professional certifications such as APR (Accredited in Public Relations), CPM, IABC Certification, Digital Marketing certifications, or equivalent credentials are highly desirable.
