Status Coup News, the leading independent news outlet that reports ON-THE-GROUND across America on the stories corporate media covers up, is looking for a passionate, driven, and digitally-savvy senior producer to help craft, polish, edit, and manage our expanding volume of YouTube and social video content—both live and recorded footage—and manage our growing team of reporters, producers, editors, video journalists, and freelance contributors. Strong communication and management skills as well as fast production and editing skills are a must.

This is not producing one individual show—it is managing a network consisting of livestreams, recorded content for YouTube, short-form social media content, and on the ground reporting and logistics. We’re looking for someone who is rightly pissed off with the state of the country, rampant corruption and injustice throughout our political system, and shares our core values of covering stories and communities the mainstream media routinely ignores. So-called “neutral,” “both sides” traditionalists need not apply.

Working under reporter and CEO Jordan Chariton, senior producer would be tasked with:

1. Assigning, overseeing, and organizing video edits for our producers/editors—and quick turnaround of videos to meet demands of digital news.

2. Going through producers/editors video edits to identify re-edits —and communicating to producers/editors what needs to be re-edited. At times, re-editing yourself may be necessary for this role.

Re-edits could be for a variety of reasons including:

  • Most compelling footage/the actual story is buried too late into video—when most have already stopped watching—rather than early on to better hook the viewer.
  • Cutting extraneous/unnecessary footage that weakens flow of video.
  • Identifying the need for subtitles in certain sections of video.
  • Identifying the need for additional video/images/sound bites.
  • Identifying parts of the video that should be added to our short “Coming Up” introductory clip at the beginning of the video.

3. Crafting compelling headlines for our YouTube videos as well as crafting video thumbnails (and working with producers and editors on doing so). **Strong headline writers/graphic design skills required**

4. Producing on the ground livestreams including crafting headlines, video thumbnails, providing story notes to reporters beforehand and breaking news updates while they’re live.

5. Writing Substack posts based off certain YouTube or social videos.

6. Working with reporters to plot out potential reporting trips: choosing the right story, identifying events & action to cover on the ground, identifying and helping book potential activists/community members for interviews.

7. Working with reporters on investigative news stories, helping to confirm necessary facts and vet the credibility of sources and/or documents.

8. Creating work schedules and rotations for staff/freelancers; serving as point person for staff and freelance contributors.

9. Coming up with ideas for content when we’re NOT on the ground (shows, video series, debates, etc) and production of that content.

10. Going on-air yourself and producing/editing those videos depending on how busy a news cycle gets.

***Not required but there could be on camera opportunities for yourself to shoot YouTube and social videos***

Required Skills:

  • Excellent news judgment and instincts for **what is the story** and **what is the headline**.
  • Digitally savvy with good instincts for what drives YouTube and other social media platform users to click on something (and stay watching).
  • Excellent judgment for identifying compelling and powerful soundbites, quotes, and visual elements.
  • Excellent judgment for investigative news reporting and vetting credibility of stories, sources, and documents.
  • Quick-moving producer and editor that can turn content around quickly to meet the demands of the fast-moving digital news industry. **We don’t have hours to produce/edit a video**
  • Ability to multi-task different assignments/edits simultaneously.
  • Good communication skills/ability to positively & and clearly communicate with reporters, producers, editors, cameraperson, etc.
  • Strong writing skills

Requirements:

  • 4-5 years production experience preferred
  • Working east coast hours
