Position Overview
Business Development Manager (BDM) under the supervision of the Regional Business Director will manage and grow Mercury Marine’s dealer network within the assigned sales zone. The role involves building relationships with dealers, OEMs, and customers while developing strategic territory growth plans. The BDM will coach, consult, and grow sales volume, market share, and profitability to meet Mercury Marine objectives.
Responsibilities
Manage and grow Mercury Marine dealer network within the assigned sales zone.
Build relationships with dealers, OEMs, customers and develop strategic territory growth plans.
Coach, consult, develop and grow sales volume, market share, and profitability.
Develop strategy to service existing accounts and generate new business.
Monitor weekly reports and take action as needed—dealer calls, dealer visits, physical inventory checks, and other tactical activities.
Participate in national, regional and local boat shows and attend sales meetings.
Utilize computer and CRM tools and manage customer accounts.
Ensure sales and marketing activities comply with Mercury corporate policies and procedures.
Travel to multiple dealer sales and service locations within the territory; at least 60% overnight travel required.
Communicate customer requirements and request support from other departments as needed.
Work jointly with inside customer account representatives, service personnel and credit personnel to achieve territory sales goals.
Attend Mercury‑sponsored events, boat shows, open houses, and dealer events, often on weekends.
Essential Functions
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with existing Mercury Marine dealers, boat sales representatives and prospective new dealers.
Commit to the long‑term development of dealers; demonstrate proven ability to coach, manage, consult, and grow sales with specific and measurable objectives.
Serve as internal and external expert on customer, competitor and market intelligence information.
Use data to discover opportunities and apply findings during discussions with dealers.
Be a skilled listener, mediator and negotiator while accomplishing goals and protecting interests.
Exceed sales and market‑share goals and demonstrate intense motivation to sell and grow market share.
Develop sales strategies, techniques, tactics and product‑knowledge training based on customer feedback and market environment.
Present key selling points, features and benefits while focusing on exceeding customer needs and expectations.
Travel to multiple dealer locations; at least 60% overnight travel required.
Collaborate cross‑functionally with other departments to achieve territory sales goals.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Marketing or equivalent.
3 to 5 years of related business experience within the Marine Industry, Recreational Industry or in Sales, Business or Marketing.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate cross‑functionally.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet/Intranet and CRM skills, especially while working remotely.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel at least 60% overnight.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong data analysis and computer skills with the ability to understand and analyze data and trends.
Practical “nose for business,” strong problem‑solving skills, both strategically and tactically.
High sense of urgency, low ego, high confidence and high credibility when facing resistance.
Working Conditions
Overnight travel required with occasional weekend events.
Compensation & Benefits
Anticipated pay range: $86,500 – $139,300 annually. Position eligible for a short‑term incentive program. Benefits include a 401(k) with company match, health benefits, paid time off, wellness program, and more.
