PRT Electronics Specialist I - Facilities Operations

The Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) department at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a PRT Electronics Specialist I.

About the Opportunity
The Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) is an automated public transit system consisting of 5 passenger stations, 73 automated vehicles, 2 maintenance facilities, 9 miles of dedicated guideway and a vast array of ancillary equipment. The PRT Electronics Specialist I position is an entry‑level position that provides electronic expertise and actions to assist in the maintenance and repair of the PRT System. This position requires various work shifts including weekends, overtime assignments, various weather conditions, indoors and outdoors, work at all station locations and requires drug testing.

What you'll do

Assists in the application of electronic theory, principles of electrical circuits, and related subjects to test, troubleshoot, repair, and modify life‑safety electronics equipment; analyzes and interprets test data, adjusts, calibrates, aligns, and modifies circuitry and components, and records results. Operates and interprets test results using computers and a variety of test instruments, maintains them, and performs soldering and desoldering with the assistance of the PRT Electronic Technician.

Performs preventive and unscheduled maintenance on a variety of equipment such as central and station computers, control room electronics, electrification panel, CCTVs, intercom system, PA system, FSK communication system, UPS, propulsion drive systems, vehicle and mechanical interfaces, braking systems, microprocessor‑based fare gates, electronic signage, phone systems, and vehicle collision avoidance systems.

Operates motor vehicles with a valid driver’s license, implements emergency response plans and actions for planned and unplanned events, communicates with other PRT employees via UHF radio, participates in vehicle recoveries as assigned by supervisor, attends technical and safety training, is responsible for assigned keys and tools, accounts for all man‑hours and materials, opens and closes passenger stations, performs snow removal and de‑icing, and supports PRT operation for special events.

Pay Grade: 13

Hours: 6 am – 2 pm

Qualifications

Associate degree in electronics or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum of six (6) months of experience troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing electronic equipment, and operating electronic test equipment.

All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of electrical and electronic systems.

Knowledge of technical terms related to electricity and electronics.

Knowledge of microcomputer hardware and software.

Ability to climb heights over 10 feet, work in inclement weather, in stressful environments, with excellent eye‑to‑hand coordination, lift over 50 pounds, work in extreme hot or cold areas, use logical problem‑solving techniques, communicate via UHF radio, assist in all assigned electrical and electronic tasks, work in uncomfortable positions, carry heavy loads, stoop, bend, walk, crawl over cable trays and in manholes, and recognize normal occupational hazards.

Valid U.S. driver’s license required.

Computer A+ certification preferred.

Physical ability to perform rapid manual motions, use hand instruments, see small components, hear radio transmissions, speak clearly on radio, stand for long periods, lift and carry heavy loads, and work in various weather conditions.
