Assistant Director of Communications for Content
Location: Syracuse, NY

Salary: $64,500 - $82,300
Hours: Standard University business hours 8:30 am – 5:00 pm (academic year) 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (summer)

Responsibilities
Editorial Leadership: Leads editorial planning and content development across digital and print platforms; oversees an editorial calendar; coordinates daily communications activities; serves as primary writer, editor, and publisher of 150+ annual news and feature stories; ensures accuracy, clarity, tone, and adherence to editorial and brand guidelines; oversees pre‑publication editorial review; serves as principal editorial contact for campus‑based partners; collaborates with university marketing partners to conceptualize cover shoots; leads school publications from concept to completion; develops themes and content based on strategic goals; coordinates project timelines and manages external vendor contracts and budgeting.
Team Collaboration and Project Coordination: Assists the Director of Communications and Media Relations in executing the Maxwell School’s communications strategy; provides editorial and storytelling expertise to translate strategic goals into actionable communication plans; works collaboratively within the communications leadership team; collaborates with the Director and Associate Director to collect data, metrics, and improve practice across digital and print channels; supports high‑profile events and publications.
Vendor Contract and Student Oversight: Oversees freelance photographers, writers, graphic designers, and other external vendors; manages contracts and coordinates payments; supervises part‑time student writers; assigns and manages workflow and deadlines; edits, publishes, and reviews content; upholds equity, inclusion, and belonging; participates in training on best practices for communicating with diverse audiences.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in English, marketing, communications, or related field; five years of experience reporting, writing, and editing feature stories for digital and print media.
Skills and Knowledge: Strong understanding of digital content‑creation standards; knowledge of UX, social media, SEO and online lead‑development strategies; ability to plan, oversee, and measure successful content‑marketing strategies; proficiency in developing collaborative systems and protocols; familiarity with print‑production processes; excellent project‑management; strong interpersonal and communication skills; Adobe Creative Suite experience desirable but not mandatory.
