DESCRIPTION Shakespeare Theatre Company seeks a Draper to join our Costume team. Under the general direction of the Costume Director, the Draper is responsible for interpreting and achieving the Costume Designer’s vision in collaboration with the Costume Department staff. This position works with the Costume Director, Resident Design Assistant, shop staff, Wardrobe Leads, and Craft team to interpret, plan, and achieve the builds needs during planning, pre-production, production, technical rehearsals, and preview weeks. The Draper will oversee all fittings, working with the design team and actors to assess the fit, function, style, and construction of all garments for the stage. A successful candidate should be able to: plan and prioritize the construction of the garments; establish construction techniques and monitor timelines for the construction of each piece from patterning to finish; supervise First Hands, Stitchers, and over-hire in the construction process; and monitor quality control of each garment while maintaining open lines of communication with staff and supervisors about the process and progress of the costume builds. This position is also responsible for identifying additional staffing needs, and communicating with designers and design assistants, along with the venue Wardrobe Leads. This is a full-time position with excellent benefits and an hourly rate of $30.20 per hour.
The prime candidate will have a bachelor\'s degree in Theatrical Costume Design/Technology or Fashion, or 3-5 years professional experience as a Draper. Preferred candidates will have an MFA in Costume Design/Technology, or 4-7 years professional experience as a Draper. Additional required management experience of 1-3 years with proven skills in the following: strong administration, organizing, and planning skills; able to interact effectively and communicate with a wide range of personalities and working styles, proven ability to manage staff; demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects; and proven ability to work with a wide range of designers and performers productively and effectively. The ideal candidate will have wide-ranging knowledge of period styles and construction techniques, along with up-to-date knowledge of theatrical costuming standards and practices. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between STC and IATSE Local 22.
