Role Description

The Deputy Editor is a full-time, hybrid position based in Dallas, TX. This role supports the editorial leadership in planning, assigning, and editing content for print and digital platforms across People Newspapers’ publications. Day-to-day responsibilities include managing story budgets and deadlines and playing a lead role in covering one of our two market areas. Develop relationships with community, school, and government leaders in order to generate article ideas. Collaborating with to produce compelling local coverage.
The Deputy Editor will help shape coverage priorities, contribute accurate, original and engaging stories, and ensure consistent editorial standards and ethical practices. The role also involves participating in community engagement, reviewing page layouts, coordinating with production teams, and contributing to digital strategy, including headlines, social promotion, and web publishing.Take photographs and capture video for print and online publications as needed. Cover breaking news. Assist in assigning and editing stories for both editions and work with editors and writers on story and special section development. Work collaboratively with Art/Production on developing special sections and story packages
This position requires occasional work before or after business hours and on weekends to cover breaking news, government meetings, and community events.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree + 1-3 years newsroom experience
Knowledgeable about digital news reporting and use of social media for reporting and news gathering
Exceptional written and verbal communication and organizational skills
Loyal, honest, high-energy, driven, strong work ethic, good sense of humor
Familiar with AP style
A valid driver’s license and daily access to an automobile to cover stories in our communities
