Purpose

Experienced journalist to provide impactful, original, trusted, and innovative content and highly skilled production support to bolster international news coverage for digital-first platforms.


Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver digital-first, trusted and impactful journalism, with an audience-centred approach.
  • Pitch, generate and produce multiplatform stories that are relevant to Australians and reflect the cultural, geographic and socio-economic diversity of the country.
  • Research, develop, write and produce content for television, radio, social and emerging platforms to meet new audiences where they are.
  • Liaise with International Managing Editor, Commissioning Editor, Americas Editor and International Digital Editor to deliver quality and relevant content.
  • Support foreign correspondents’ news production as required, including making calls, setting up interviews, conducting research, scripting and editing. As directed, respond to breaking news output as required for different platforms.
  • Ability to produce digital stories in Core, Live Blog, and write and produce third-party vertical videos.
  • Assist the ABC News Washington Digital Producer/Journalist with planning and output and backfill when required.
  • Contribute to editorial meetings as required, suggesting ideas, leads and angles. Adopt a flexible, collaborative approach within the team. Contribute to staff training as required.
  • Maintain an understanding of international current events and issues, monitoring a wide range of media outlets/sources; develop and foster a network of contacts and sources.
  • Actively promote the ABC values and apply all relevant workplace policies and guidelines.
  • Cooperate with any reasonable instruction, procedure or policy relating to safety and take reasonable care for your own safety and that of other people who may be affected by your conduct while at work. Additional WHS responsibilities apply to Managers and Supervisors, Team Directors, and other Officers.

Key Capabilities/Qualifications/Experience

  • A demonstrated and ongoing interest and passion in finding and telling international stories that set the agenda and break news.
  • Demonstrated experience using social media, search engines and other open-source material for news gathering, research and audience engagement, with a sound understanding of the editorial and verification risks involved.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and producing social content.
  • Photography skills.
  • Demonstrated experience of story production in Core (or equivalent CMS) and Live Blogging.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing and producing/reporting for digital with sound editorial judgment.
  • A solid understanding of the ABC News strategy, audience insights and data to inform commissioning and prioritise stories for platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, gather and produce stories clearly and accurately in accordance with ABC Editorial Policies, Style Guides and legal advice.
  • Excellent organisational, planning and communication skills; proven ability to meet production deadlines.
  • Able to work collaboratively with a diverse range of people across the ABC and with international colleagues.
  • Demonstrated understanding and passion to source and create authentic content which represents the broad diversity of the Australian community, including stories that reflect a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds and Indigenous communities.
