The Catholic Diocese of Richmond, Office of Communications is seeking a Managing Editor for The Catholic Virginian.
The Managing Editor oversees the daily operations of the print and digital versions of The Catholic Virginian and partners with the Editor-in-Chief in implementing the vision of the Publisher. The Managing Editor fully upholds and conveys the magisterial teachings, policies and positions of the Catholic Church and the diocesan bishop. Through The Catholic Virginian, the Managing Editor supports all initiatives of the diocesan Office of Communications.
Responsibilities & Tasks:
Collaborate with Editor-in-Chief in creating layout and determining content for The Catholic Virginian
Oversee writers and photographers in various assignments.
Develop story ideas; assign stories and deadlines.
Copy-edit all articles for content, spelling, grammar, and accuracy
Proof the entire newspaper before publication.
Write stories, conduct interviews, and take photos as needed.
Assist the Editor-in-Chief in creating social media platforms for The Catholic Virginian and developing social media strategy.
Manage and assist in maintaining timely content for the print/digital Catholic Virginian and social media platforms.
Evaluate material from OSV News, Catholic News Agency, and other sources for publication consideration.
Perform other duties as requested by the Bishop, Vicar General or Director of Communications.
Education / Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Communications/English/Journalism or related field required
At least s ix ye ars’ experience in broadcast/communications industry with at le ast three y ears in Catholic media and/or newspaper production preferred
A practicing Catholic in good standing who supports Church teaching is required
KKnowledge / Skills:
Strong working knowledge of the structure and teachings of the Catholic Church
Must possess high level of attention to detail
Knowledge of newspaper production and layout
Knowledge of Associated Press Stylebook
Ability to analyze, interpret, and use sound news judgment to make content decisionsStrong organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
Strong interpersonal, leadership, and people management skills
Experience managing teams including dotted-line relationships preferred
Ability to maintain confidentiality is required
Proficiency with various PC software, website-building, and social media
Proficiency in Adobe InDesign a plus
Ability to speak/read/write Spanish fluently a plus
Photography/videography skills a plus
Working Conditions:
The Managing Editor is a full-time position.
Typical work hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
However, occasional evening/weekend work and travel will be required.
Production weeks may require longer hours as needed.
