Like talking to people? Love finding things out? Turn that into a reporting career.
Are you the person who gets people talking—and remembers the detail everyone else missed? Do you hear something interesting and immediately want to know more?
401kWire is hiring a curious, personable reporter who wants to find out what’s happening before everyone else does. No reporting experience or financial expertise is required. Bring a quick mind, persistence, and a willingness to learn. We’ll help you build the rest.
The job
You’ll cover the people and companies behind the 401(k) retirement business: who’s moving where, who’s making deals, what firms are planning, and what it all means for the people working in the industry.
At the heart of the job is finding news: something that wasn’t previously known or reported. Scoops matter here. So do the relationships that lead to them.
You’ll spend much of your day talking with people, making calls, asking follow-up questions, and developing sources who trust you and take your calls. You’ll travel to conferences and industry events, where a conversation between sessions can be the start of your next story. Then you’ll check the facts and turn what you’ve learned into clear, engaging articles.
Who you are
You enjoy meeting people—and listening to them. You’re interested in what makes them tick, what they’re working on, and what happens next. You’re willing to introduce yourself, ask the extra question, and follow up when the first call goes unanswered.
You learn quickly, take feedback well, and follow through. You care about getting things right and earning people’s trust.
A knack for finding things out goes a long way here. Pair it with a way with words, and you’ll have a powerful combination. Previous journalism experience or knowledge of financial services is welcome, but neither is necessary.
