Media Coordinator

Organizational context
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the UN system's focal point for coordinating disaster reduction efforts and ensuring synergies among related activities. It guides, monitors, and reports on the Sendai Framework, supports its implementation, and raises global awareness. This role sits within the UNDRR Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean (ROAC).

Job purpose
This role serves to coordinate media coverage and communication efforts for key UNDRR events and campaigns, specifically the World Tsunami Awareness Day and the IX Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (RP27). The purpose is to enhance the visibility of UNDRR's work and the Sendai Framework across regional and national media outlets. This involves developing and disseminating media materials, organizing virtual meetings, producing newsletters, securing media placements for op-eds, and facilitating media engagement during events. The ultimate goal is to mobilize the Regional Media Network and amplify disaster risk reduction messages to a wider audience.

Responsibilities

Coordinate media coverage for the World Tsunami Awareness Day and the IX Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (RP27), including outreach, press materials, and monitoring.

Secure placement of op-eds in regional media for key advocacy campaigns.

Develop and disseminate a package for the World Tsunami Awareness Day campaign to the Regional Media Network.

Organize and facilitate a virtual advisory council meeting for the Regional Media Network.

Design and produce two Regional Media Network newsletters, curating content and ensuring timely dissemination.

Collect and document good practices and impact stories for communication products.

Develop and disseminate press releases and media advisories for RP27.

Coordinate media outreach, accreditation, and registration for RP27, preparing media kits and website content.

Secure and coordinate interviews and media appearances for spokespersons.

Identify and propose media contacts as moderators.

Provide on-site media coordination during RP27 and monitor its coverage.

Act as rapporteur for the RP27 media session.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in journalism, communication, media relations, international relations, or a related field is required.

A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted.

Fluency in English and Spanish is required.

Work experience

A minimum of five years of experience in journalism and media relations is required.

Experience in media relations development and event management is necessary.

Proven experience with regional media across multiple channels (print, radio, broadcast, online) is essential.

An established network of media contacts in the Americas and the Caribbean with a track record of securing coverage is required.
