Editorial Associate.

Saturday Review

Remote

New York City preferred, but not required

Initially part time hourly , with the expectation of transitioning to full time as Saturday Review grows toward its September 2027 print launch

Saturday Review is being reborn.

Founded in 1924, Saturday Review was for generations an important forum for American intellectual and cultural life, bringing together leading writers and thinkers across literature, science, the arts, public affairs, and the major ideas shaping society.

We are now building a new Saturday Review for a new era.

Our focus is Science, Arts, Letters, and Public Life. The new Saturday Review will combine an ambitious digital publication with a quarterly print magazine, drawing on the extraordinary legacy of the original while creating something distinctly contemporary.

We are looking for an exceptional Editorial Associate to help build it.

This is not a conventional position at an established publication. The person joining us will have an opportunity to help create the editorial systems, contributor relationships, and working culture of a historic publication being rebuilt from the ground up.

The Editorial Associate will work directly with Founding Editor Jamie Metzl and closely with Managing Editor Carl Stoffers, Publisher Milton Grin, and the broader editorial team.

The position will begin part time but we anticipate that the right person could move into a full time role relatively quickly as editorial activity accelerates.

The role

The Editorial Associate will help turn editorial ideas into finished work while keeping a growing number of writers, assignments, deadlines, and production details moving simultaneously.

The role combines intellectual engagement with rigorous organization.

Responsibilities will include:

• Helping identify outstanding writers, thinkers, subjects, and emerging intellectual and cultural conversations

• Researching prospective contributors and preparing background and briefing materials

• Supporting Jamie Metzl and the editorial team in commissioning and developing articles

• Communicating professionally and thoughtfully with distinguished writers and contributors

• Maintaining the contributor database and prospective writer lists for upcoming issues

• Tracking commissions, assignments, deadlines, submissions, revisions, and publication status

• Maintaining draft histories and author correspondence

• Coordinating contracts, permissions, photography, biographies, and other contributor materials

• Maintaining the editorial calendar and detailed Fall and Winter production grids

• Helping coordinate the editorial process from initial idea through publication

• Working closely with Carl Stoffers on editorial workflow and production coordination

• Following up on decisions, assignments, deadlines, and next steps so that nothing falls through the cracks

• Researching archival material and helping develop Saturday Review’s historic archive for contemporary publication

• Assisting with newsletters, digital publishing, podcasts, special projects, events, and other editorial initiatives as they develop

• Helping build the systems and processes required for an ambitious new publication to operate effectively

Carl Stoffers will remain responsible for overall editorial operations and production coordination. The Editorial Associate will provide the daily organizational infrastructure that allows Jamie and the editorial team to concentrate on writers, ideas, and editorial quality.

Who we are looking for

There is no single résumé that defines the right candidate.

We care most about intelligence, curiosity, judgment, initiative, editorial sensibility, organization, and the ability to get things done.

The strongest candidate will be:

• Intellectually curious across literature, science, technology, history, culture, philosophy, politics, and the forces transforming society

• An excellent reader, writer, researcher, and critical thinker

• Exceptionally organized and able to manage many simultaneous assignments

• Digitally fluent and comfortable learning new editorial and organizational tools

• Comfortable communicating with highly accomplished writers, academics, scientists, artists, and public intellectuals

• Resourceful and able to take initiative without waiting for detailed instructions

• Attentive to detail and extremely reliable about follow through

• Comfortable moving between large intellectual questions and small logistical details

• Able to bring order and clarity to a fast moving startup environment

• Collaborative, thoughtful, discreet, and professional

• Excited by the opportunity to help build something rather than simply step into an existing system

Experience at a magazine, newspaper, digital publication, publishing house, think tank, university, cultural institution, or similar organization would be valuable, but it is not essential.

We would rather find an unusually bright, curious, organized, and driven person than insist on a conventional publishing background.

Why Saturday Review

Most editorial positions ask someone to join an institution whose structures and traditions are already established.

This position offers the opportunity to help rebuild one.

Saturday Review has nearly a century of history behind it and an entirely new chapter ahead. We are assembling writers and thinkers across disciplines and generations with the goal of creating a serious, accessible, independent forum for ideas at a moment of extraordinary technological and social change.

The person joining us now will have an unusual opportunity to help shape what Saturday Review becomes.

To apply

Please send a résumé and a short note telling us about yourself, what you are intellectually curious about, and why the opportunity to help rebuild Saturday Review interests you.

Writing, editing, research, or other relevant work samples are welcome but not required.
