About the Job
If you've spent years building strong media relationships, know how to turn a good story into meaningful coverage, and are comfortable leading both clients and teams, let's talk.
We're looking for an experienced Account Director who can take ownership of client relationships, lead communications strategy, and help teams deliver work that gets noticed. You'll be a senior voice on accounts, working closely with founders, CEOs, executives, and other decision-makers while guiding junior team members and making sure the work stays smart, strategic, and moving forward.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll be expected to think strategically, build relationships, pitch reporters, develop compelling stories, and know when to step in and get things done.
One important note: this role involves a lot of pitching. If media relations is one of your favorite parts of PR, you'll have plenty of opportunities to do it here.
What You'll Do
Lead day-to-day strategy and execution across multiple client accounts
Serve as a senior strategic advisor and trusted point of contact for clients
Build strong relationships with clients and understand their businesses, goals, challenges, and competitive landscape
Develop and execute communications strategies that generate meaningful visibility and strengthen client reputation
Create compelling story ideas, messaging, media strategies, launch plans, and executive positioning programs
Lead media relations efforts and proactively pitch reporters, editors, producers, podcast hosts, and influencers
Build and maintain strong relationships across relevant business, industry, trade, consumer, and mainstream media
Identify news hooks, trends, cultural moments, and opportunities that can create visibility for clients
Write and edit press releases, media pitches, thought leadership, bylines, executive communications, presentations, and other client materials
Lead product launches, company announcements, funding announcements, executive appointments, events, and other major communications initiatives
Counsel executives and senior leaders on messaging, media interviews, thought leadership, and communications strategy
Oversee account timelines, deliverables, budgets, and priorities to ensure work stays on track
Lead and mentor junior and mid-level team members, providing guidance on strategy, pitching, writing, and client management
Review and elevate team deliverables to ensure the work is thoughtful, strategic, and high quality
Lead client meetings and presentations and confidently communicate strategic recommendations
Help manage challenging client situations and provide direct, thoughtful counsel when needed
Identify opportunities to expand existing accounts and contribute to new business pitches and proposals
Stay current on news, media trends, and developments across clients' industries
What We're Looking For
Significant experience working in a PR agency environment, with experience at the Account Director or comparable senior level
A strong track record of managing client relationships and leading communications programs
Proven media relationships and the ability to consistently secure meaningful coverage
Experience developing and executing media strategies across digital, print, broadcast, podcasts, newsletters, and other relevant platforms
Excellent pitching, writing, storytelling, and communication skills
Strong strategic thinking and the ability to turn business objectives into smart communications strategies
Confidence working directly with CEOs, founders, executives, and other senior-level clients
Strong presentation skills and the ability to clearly explain recommendations and ideas
Ability to lead, mentor, and motivate a team while remaining hands-on with the work
Ability to manage multiple accounts, deadlines, and competing priorities without losing attention to detail
Strong organizational and project-management skills
Sound judgment and the ability to navigate challenging client conversations
A self-starter who is proactive, resourceful, curious, and doesn't wait to be told what needs to happen next
A genuine interest in news, media, business, culture, and the industries our clients operate in
You'll thrive here if you genuinely enjoy PR, follow the news, understand what makes a story interesting, and still get excited about picking up the phone or sending the pitch yourself.
Here's what actually matters:
You'll have a real seat at the table with clients and the opportunity to influence their communications strategy from the ground up. This isn't a role where you're simply managing timelines or delegating work. You'll be expected to bring ideas, build relationships, make decisions, and help create work that delivers results.
You'll work directly with senior executives and decision-makers while leading a team of talented PR professionals. You'll have the freedom to take ownership of your accounts, develop creative approaches, and turn opportunities into stories that matter.
Compensation
Base salary range: $110,000–$125,000, depending on experience, expertise, and overall fit.
Equal Opportunity
Rubenstein Public Relations is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and provide equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.
