Marqo is supercharging revenue for the world’s largest eCommerce brands.
Founded by ex-Amazon engineers, Marqo’s AI-native technology helps shoppers find the items they are
actually looking for. This technology drives hundreds of millions of dollars in incremental revenue for
brands such as Fashion Nova, MillerKnoll, Muji and Dooney & Bourke.
Backed by world-leading VC funds (e.g., Lightspeed, Blackbird), Marqo has grown revenue 7x in the last
12 months. Our technology outcompetes everything on the market. We’re growing exceptionally fast, and
we need exceptional people to continue to fuel that growth.
The role
These are our core beliefs about sales:
Lean sales’ teams win : We’re intentional about having a small sales team - it avoids process /
bureaucracy creep. This means you can focus on closing deals, while not having to deal with
endless other AEs, territories etc.
Generous commission : An ambitious AE in a small team with market‑leading technology can
make life changing wealth, rather than scraping by to get to quota. We don’t hire until our existing
AEs can’t take on more opportunities - which means all of our AEs make (at least) OTE.
Travel wins deals : 85% of Marqo’s 2026 deals involved an in‑person interaction with a prospect,
whether it’s at a conference or on‑site visit. We invest so that our AEs can do as many in-person
visits as possible.
Product curiosity : The best AEs can be easily confused as product managers. They are curious
about the product they are selling, and they learn it inside out.
In this role, you have the opportunity to sell the most compelling search and product discovery solution on
the market - it is built by some of the brightest minds out of Amazon. We love A/B testing Marqo against
other providers, because we win. Your job is to find those brands, build a relationship with them, and get
them to test out Marqo (and then close the deal). Once they sign with Marqo, your job is to expand the
account with further products that drive revenue for them.
What you'll do
This is a hands‑on hunter role, where you will eat what you close. You will be expected to:
Build pipeline:
While we have BDR and demand gen support, the best AEs build their own pipeline. You should expect to build your pipeline through conferences, networking, mobilizing customers and outbounding.
Run the sales process independently:
Once a lead is in your pipeline, you run them through our sales process. While our sales process is robustly documented in a playbook, it’s there for guidance, rather than a strict set of rules. You will have the autonomy to run the deal how you see fit.
Expand accounts:
Once you close an account, you will get the opportunity to expand those accounts with additional features and capabilities.
Shape our process:
As a fast-growing start‑up, you will have an impact on shaping the DNA of our sales process.
What you'll bring
We don’t care if you don't have sales experience. Some of the best sellers we’ve seen didn’t come from a
traditional sales background. Of course, it’s a positive if you do, but don’t let a lack of sales’ experience
turn you off. But there are some universal attributes of those who succeed in our sales’ team:
Must haves
Confidence with numbers:
The brands we work with live and die by their margins. If we can’t prove to them that Marqo will positively impact their P&L, they won’t buy. That means you need to be comfortable with numbers, and know how to educate a prospect on the math of why Marqo is a no‑brainer.
Product orientated:
You don’t have to be deeply technical, but you should have an aptitude for product (and a bonus if you do in the ecommerce setting). By the end of the first six months, you could be easily confused as a product manager given your understanding of the Marqo product.
Comfort persuading senior executives:
Your job is to turn a skeptical executive into a believer. You should feel comfortable forging genuine relationships with prospects, understand how they think, and ultimately turn them into evangelists for Marqo.
The nice‑to‑haves
Selling experience:
You have 3+ years experience selling complex solutions to VPs and C‑suite executives, with ticket prices from $150k up to 7‑figures.
Ecommerce experience:
You understand the ecommerce space (especially the search and product discovery space). You are across the different players in the search space, and what makes each solution different.
Personality / working style fit
This is the personality which typically succeeds at Marqo.
We work hard.
Building an early‑stage company requires effort. We have to outcompete much larger, resourced companies with a fraction of the help. We are David, not Goliath. We aren’t a 996 work environment - but our work days are intense and always on.
We are ambitious (and we should be rewarded).
Our career is a big part of our identity - we want to have an outsized impact on the world, but we also want to be rewarded for our hard work. We know that every customer win is a win for our equity, and every customer loss, is inversely a hit to our equity.
The best idea wins.
We speak plainly to one another to get to the best idea. It’s never personal - but we prefer to figure out the truth, even if the answer isn’t the one we wanted to hear. The best idea should always win, regardless of whether it was proposed by an intern, employee or CEO.
We don’t want our hands held.
Our default is to figure out stuff ourselves. We don’t like to be micromanaged, and in return, we earn the trust of those around us by not dropping the ball. If we can’t figure it out, we speak to a teammate. But otherwise, we are confident we can figure most things out ourselves.
We have lives outside of work.
While we work hard, we also have lives outside of work. Kids, hobbies, travel, sports etc. We believe that finding moments to switch off from work allows us to bring the intensity to when we do work.
What we offer
OTE is between $350k - $400k (and base is between $120k - $180k) based on experience. But there is
no cap on commission - our tenured AEs always surpass OTE.
The role is based in San Francisco or remote (US only) and works directly with Marqo's founding and leadership team. Candidates must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa.
