Seems the original plan for the front page Southland advertisement would have been even more intrusive. Kevin Roderick at LA Observed has the scoop:

In an e-mail to staffers today, Eddy Hartenstein announces that Jim Newton is coming back to his job as editorial page editor:

The L.A. Times has named former DirecTV exec Eddy Hartenstein publisher, according to a story in today's LAT.
Hartenstein reportedly didn't seek out the position and had to give it careful consideration before accepting Sam Zell's offer:
