Cable Network Ranker: Week of January 30

Featuring the Florida and Nevada primaries, the week of January 30, 2012 should have been an eventful one for the cable news channels. In the end, everything remained more or less the same. Fox News Channel was the top cable news outlet for the week, placing third in primetime among all ad-supported cable nets with 1.993M total viewers. FNC placed fourth in total day with 1.123M.

MSNBC placed 25th in primetime and 28th in total day with 815,000 and 454,000 viewers, respectively. CNN placed 31st in primetime and total day, drawing 637,000 and 402,000 viewers.

Among the business networks: CNBC placed 51st in primetime with 232,000 viewers, and 50th in total day with 180,000. Fox Business Network continues to tread water, placing 89th in primetime and 86th in total day with 51,000 and 56,000 viewers, respectively.

Current TV fared even worse, placing 90th in primetime and 95th in total day, with 50,000 and 22,000 viewers.

The Ticker: Goldston, Claman, Ratigan…

Broadcasting & Cable reports ABC News is considering elevating “Good Morning America” senior executive producer James Goldston to “a more wide-ranging role.” The personnel change has no immediate timeline, according to B&C, but sources expect “GMA” EP Tom Cibrowski to take over for Goldston.

FBN’s Liz Claman says she got to the anchor desk by demanding it (as the Fox Business mantra goes). “I was getting passed up to be an anchor,” Claman tells Boston.com, “and one day I stormed into my boss’ office, and I made a case to him that I should be an anchor.”

With the help of Deepak Chopra, Dylan Ratigan has turned over a new leaf, the MSNBC host tells The Hill. “I was the angriest man in cable up to about a year ago,” Ratigan says. “I’ve long since moved to a much happier lifestyle.”

’48 Hours’ is Saturday’s #1 Show

While political junkies were watching the results of the Nevada caucus on the cable networks, a majority of those watching broadcast TV Saturday night, were watching CBS News’ “48 Hours Mystery.” The episode “Dark Side of Paradise,” about an American who went missing while sailing in the Caribbean, was the #1 show of the night with 6.12M Total Viewers. The show won its time period in two younger demos: A25-54 (1.8/05) and A18-49 (1.3/04). Compared to the same night last year, the show was up +13% in households, +20% in A25-54 and +44% in A18-49.

Cable News Now Top Source for Americans Searching for Political News

Fewer Americans are closely following news about the presidential campaign than four years ago, the <a href="http://www.people-press.org/files/legacy-pdf/2012%20Communicating%20Release.pdf"target="_blank">Pew Research Center has found. But of those who are, most are getting their information from cable news.

This latest Pew study, among a national sample of 1,507 adults, was conducted between Jan. 4-8, smack dab in between the Iowa and New Hampshire GOP contests, when the cable news channels programmed little else. If this poll is done, say, between Oct. 4-8, you’ll see local news as more of a source for coverage as more local and statewide races will make the news. The drop in the impact of other news sources is also due to the fact that four years ago there were two closely watched primary contests, not just one. But this doesn’t bode well for local newspapers and TV: their drop from 8 years ago, has been the Internet’s gain.

Back to the cablers, not surprisingly, when asked where they get most of their campaign news, Pew found, “far more Republicans than Democrats cite Fox News, while Democrats are much more likely than Republicans to cite CNN and MSNBC.”

Much more in the full report. <a href="http://www.people-press.org/files/legacy-pdf/2012%20Communicating%20Release.pdf"target="_blank">Click here.

Babs Goes Bad Ass: Hits The Streets With Graffiti Artist

It looks like ABC News anchor Barbara Walters is planning a profile on graffiti artists David Choe.

Choe famously took Facebook stock in lieu of cash when he decorated the social networking site’s office back in 2005. That stock is now worth more than $200 million.

Walters posted photos on her Facebook page of her and Choe on the streets, with Choe spray-painting the words “Babs, don’t make me cry” on a wall and, uh, Walters herself (see right). BABS-1, as Choe refers to her on his Facebook page, even tagged some wall herself, as this picture shows.

Update: The interview will run Thursday on “Good Morning America” and “Nightline.”

Celebrating the Giants: ‘Wrong Way Rooney’

As New York Giants fans crowded into lower Manhattan for this morning’s ticker tape parade celebrating the Super Bowl champions — covered live on all of the local TV stations — one of their most loyal fans was watching from above.
Cable Networks Scale Back Coverage of Tonight’s Primary, Caucus Results

Voters in three states — Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri — will weigh in today on the 2012 GOP Presidential nominee. In a departure from recent political coverage, cable networks are scaling back for this round of voting — a primary in Missouri, which is non-binding in the first place, and caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota.

Fox News will feature regular primetime programming, with live updates from Bret Baier at the top and bottom of every hour. Baier will also anchor a one-hour special at 11pmET.

MSNBC’s regular prime time anchors — Chris Matthews, Al Sharpton, Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell — will fold election coverage into their respective regularly scheduled programs.

CNN is changing up its regular lineup with Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper anchoring special coverage beginning at 7pmET from Atlanta.
Two Reasons Why Disney and Univision Are Interested In Launching A Cable Channel

The news that Disney and Univision are in talks to possibly launch a cable news channel targeting English-speaking Hispanics shouldn’t come as a surprise. Univision has already announced its intention to launch a 24-hour news channel, and ABC News has long been looking for some sort of partner to help amortize its costs.

But here are two other reasons why the companies may be planning the channel: Hispanic news programming skews much younger than the traditional TV news outlets, and a Hispanic-targeted network will have an easier time gaining cable distribution, the bane of every network executive’s existence.

It is no secret that TV news viewers skew old… often very old. Your average Fox News viewer is 65, CNN viewer is 63 and MSNBC viewer is 59. Only in TV news would a 50-year-old qualify as someone in the “younger viewer” 25-54 demographic.

Among young Hispanics, however, news seems to be much more popular. As we have noted, Univision’s nightly newscast has more viewers age 18-34 than every network newscast, save for “NBC Nightly News.” During many weeks, Univision even tops NBC in that demo.

In other words, young Hispanics may be more inclined to watch TV news than other young viewers.

With regard to distribution:

Evening News Ratings: Week of January 30

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” held a 1.3 million Total Viewer lead on #2 “World News with Diane Sawyer” last week in the evening news ratings, which had 1.5 million more viewers than Scott Pelley‘s “CBS Evening News.” Season to date, “Evening News” is the only newscast up in both households (4.3/08 from 4.0/08, +8%) and Total Viewers (6.34M vs. 6.08M, +4%).

Compared to the same week last year, which saw the height of the coverage of the Egyptian revolution, all three newscasts were down. Compared to the week prior, only “Nightly News” grew Total Viewers and only “World News” grew younger viewers.

Numbers for the week of January 30, 2012:

ABC Has Been in the 24-hour Cable News Game Before, 30 Years Ago

After the news <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203315804577207501238640514.html?mod=WSJ_hp_MIDDLETopStories"target="_blank">broke last night that Disney and Univision were in talks to create a 24-hour cable news channel, we heard from a longtime cable news executive who reminded us that ABC News has been here before.

In 1982, ABC partnered with Westinghouse Broadcasting for something called the Satellite News Channel. Based in Stamford, CT, the channel produced a rotating newscast every 20 minutes with the slogan, “Give us 18 minutes, we’ll give you the world.” It was meant to compete with the 2-year-old CNN and the 6-month-old CNN2 (now HLN). It went on the air on June 21, 1982 but failed because it couldn’t get decent cable carriage. It went off the air October 27, 1983, was bought by CNN and shut down. What do you think of the Disney/Univision idea?

ABC News Digital Hits 100 Million Mark

As ABC News explores the idea of a 24-hour cable news channel, its digital arm, which includes the 24-hour ABC News Now, just hit a milestone.

For the first time ever, for the month of January, ABC News Digital streamed more than 100 million videos. The game-changer for ABCNews.com has been the partnership with Yahoo! — which puts ABC News in direct competition with CNN.com, which claims to be the #1 broadcast news website. (CNN averaged 101 million <a href="http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/479597-CNN_com_Tops_100_Million_Video_Starts_Per_Month_in_2011.php"target="_blank">monthly video streams in 2011.)

January marks ABC News Digital’s most trafficked month in history with more than 414 million page views to various ABC News sites as well as ABC News stories on Yahoo! News. The online site for “Good Morning America” tripled its monthly traffic and has grown +25% each month since it became part of the Yahoo! domain in October.

WSJ: Disney, Univision In Talks to Launch 24-Hour English Language News Channel

Fifteen years after exploring the idea of a 24-hour news channel, ABC News may soon find itself back in the cable game. The Wall Street Journal is reporting ABC’s parent The Walt Disney Co. and Univision Communications Inc. are in talks to create an English language news channel… and it could be launched before the November elections.

The new channel would plunge Disney’s ABC News more directly into the fractious cable-news wars, competing alongside Time Warner Inc’s CNN, News Corp.’s Fox News and Comcast Corp.’s MSNBC. And it would mark a big strategic shift for Univision, which since its beginnings five decades ago has been defined by its Spanish broadcasts, but which will now compete for English speakers.

WSJ reports the talks have been lead by ABC News President Ben Sherwood and Univision Networks President Cesar Conde. ABC News is not commenting on the report.

The deal looks good on paper. It will begin to amortize the costs of ABC News, (while creating many long days for ABC Newsers.) Disney has proven cable clout. And Univision, which boasts its own news division and studios in Miami, provides an attractive and growing young audience: 1-in-5 American schoolchildren is Hispanic, 1-in-4 newborns is Hispanic.

Univision Communications CEO Randy Falco has been here before. He was president of NBC Broadcasting when his network, along with Microsoft, launched MSNBC in 1996. ABC News abandoned plans in May of that year to launch its own news channel after NBC and News Corp. ramped up plans for MSNBC and Fox News Channel. Falco was also instrumental in NBC’s acquisition of Univision competitor Telemundo in 2002.
