Aneesh Raman, a Middle East correspondent for CNN, resigned Friday. His note to the staff said he wanted to try something completely new. "After much thought, and with a heavy heart, I have decided to leave journalism and CNN," he wrote.

Currently based in Cairo, Raman reported from Baghdad, Iran, Syria, Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. Raman has the distinction of being the first Western journalist to announce the execution of Saddam Hussein, quoting Arab television.

After much thought, and with a heavy heart, I have decided to leave journalism and CNN. Over the past four years abroad I have had the humbling privilege to witness and cover some of the most dramatic and important news stories imaginable. But now I have decided to return home to the United States and try something different. I haven't figured out what exactly that will be, but I can only hope it will be as exciting as my time at CNN. Every step, from the moment I joined as a freelance Assignment Editor on the International Desk in the fall of 2002, has fulfilled the dreams of a kid who grew up watching the news in awe of those who reported it. For the lessons you've taught me and for the work you do, I thank you all, especially Tony and Parisa who both supported me from the start and never stopped. At this point in my life I feel strongly it is time to take a break and get back home. I wish you all the best.
