The West Boulevard Library is conveniently located along the West Boulevard Corridor on the bus line for ease of access. This close-knit community on the westside of Charlotte houses several long established neighborhoods. Serving as a meeting place for its residents, West Boulevard Library is a warm and welcoming community hub. The community looks to the staff of the West Boulevard Library for its digital literacy needs. This Library branch strives to develop and support partnerships with other community resources to enrich the lives of the residents.

Schedule

Day shift 8am – 5pm. This position requires at least one closing shift per week of 11am-8pm, and alternating Friday and Saturday shifts of 8am-5pm.

Position Summary

This is a Teen Services Librarian position. The Teen Services Librarian provides programming to youth ages 12 to 18. Teen staff members should also focus on special populations including preteens and emerging adults, as well as parents/caregivers and educators. Teen Services staff best understand how to serve the teens in their communities by providing them with a variety of diverse programs with consideration of equity, diversity, and inclusion; principles of adolescent development; and the needs, interests, and goals of all teens in the community.

In addition to programming, this position is responsible for providing frontline customer service to customers of all ages in the library branch. This includes technology assistance and assisting customers in accessing the full spectrum of library resources in multiple formats - print, digital, media, programs and classes. Other responsibilities include responding to reference, research/homework and readers' advisory requests; explaining and interpreting the library's services, policies and procedures; developing, managing and promoting the library's collection of materials; and assisting in the planning and implementation of programs that focus on the following priority areas: Learning, Literacies, Creativity, Community, and Leadership & Life Skills.

Essential Functions

Meet customers' informational, research and pleasure reading needs by matching requests to appropriate resources.

Determine the timeliest, authoritative and appropriate information source for each customer, based on questions asked, the information required, and the format (print, non-print) that provides the most effective delivery.

Train customers in the use of electronic reference resources, internet searches, e-books and digital downloads; provide guidance and instruction for both general and specific requests. Enables customers to operate PCs, tablets, mobile devices to access digital materials.

Troubleshoot problems or instructs customers in the use of software and hardware. Assesses the level of instruction needed to use technology.

Manage and maintain library materials in specific, assigned areas of the collection by noting community needs and customer requests, consulting reviews and bibliographies, checking lost and missing reports and recommending purchases.

Perform relevant collection management tasks to ensure that resources are available to meet the informational and recreational needs of the community.

Provide quality programming for a targeted audience; creates promotional materials and merchandises collection with displays.

Develop varied and creative programs, publications and displays to enhance library services.

Continue professional development through workshops, classes, webinars, conferences, retreats, etc. request marketing assistance.

Choose activities to enhance or develop skills needed to meet professional or learning goals.

Perform administrative duties that may include serving as manager on duty, scheduling employees, submitting maintenance and IT tickets, dealing with customer concerns, reserving meeting rooms, interpreting and enforcing library policy.

Exercise sound judgment and uses available resources to determine the action needed.

Provide coordination and oversight of the teen volunteer program at West. Blvd. Library.

Collaborate with Library Associates to plan and implement programming for teens.

Contribute as needed to CMLibrary Teens Instagram account.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of two years of public library experience

Education

Master’s degree in Library science from an ALA-accredited institution

Licenses And Certifications

NC Public Library certification required or must be obtained within 12 months of hires

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual

Experience engaging with preteen and teen populations in a public library setting.

Experience facilitating outreach services and developing partnerships to connect students with public library services.

Experience and interest developing inclusive programming for preteen and teen populations.

Knowledge Of
