Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm. The person is expected to be on call for breaking news events. Occasional work after hours or on weekends will be required.

Hiring Range: $41,775 - $52,850

About this Position

KOSU seeks a multimedia journalist to work as an Indigenous Affairs Reporter. The ideal candidate will have an established portfolio of reporting on Indigenous issues or another beat that demonstrates an ability to tell nuanced and engaging stories. Public radio experience is a plus but is not required. The person will be an accomplished reporter who is eager to build community around Indigenous reporting, including engagement activities. The candidate should also have experience building trusting relationships in news deserts and/or with populations of people who may have previous negative experiences with traditional media.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in Mass Communication, Journalism & Broadcasting or a related field (degree must be conferred on or before the start date)
  • Two years’ experience as a news producer, journalist, and/or announcer
  • Successful experience with broadcast, production, and field recording equipment
  • Proficiency with contemporary audio editing software
  • Experience reporting in the field and using social media and digital tools for journalism
  • Experience doing FOIAs and building journalism sources
  • Experience managing complex projects and meeting deadlines
  • Valid driver's license

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Excellent spoken and written English skills
  • Strong news copywriting skills suitable for public radio
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to operate audio production equipment in the field and studio
  • Commitment to ethical journalism standards
  • Experience writing in-depth enterprise stories
  • Ability to recognize data patterns and build diverse sources
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Independence, initiative, and good judgment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years reporting experience, preferably in public radio or audio storytelling
  • Experience reporting in marginalized communities or news deserts
  • Experience developing original stories from sources and data
  • Experience with long-form project reporting
  • Ability to pitch and complete experimental projects
