Overview
CDOC Technician III (Library) - Denver. This position is with the State of Colorado Department of Corrections and involves supervising the daily operation of a library in an adult correctional facility, serving offenders of multiple classification levels. The role works under the supervision of the Regional Librarian, Programs Manager, and Programs Supervisor and includes designing and implementing library administrative operations, updating procedures, planning work, and monitoring library funds. The position may assist in other areas of the facility during emergencies/lockdowns. The position works directly with inmates in a state correctional facility.
Responsibilities
- Answer requests for information by conducting reference interviews, locating desired information, and executing searches.
- Provide instruction to library users on information literacy and library skills; inform users about interlibrary loan; screen requests for selection criteria; instruct patrons on loan procedures; search incoming books for content and contraband.
- Provide library service to inmates in Restricted Housing/diagnostic units who cannot visit the library.
- Recommend materials for addition to the library collection to meet educational, informational, and recreational needs of the inmate population.
- Assign classification numbers and subject headings for new materials per Dewey Decimal Classification, Abridged and Sears List of Subject Headings.
- Monitor behavior of inmate library users, enforce security regulations and library rules; address rule infractions and resolve conflicts between offenders.
- Prepare annual funding requests and report annual library expenditures; compose and distribute monthly narrative and statistical reports.
- Supervise inmate library clerks, assign tasks, monitor progress, schedule work, establish standards, and review final products; provide initial and ongoing training for inmate library clerks.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Three (3) years of technical or high-level clerical experience. This work experience must be clearly described in your application work history. Part-time work is prorated.
- Technical work is defined as skilled work applying specialized techniques, procedures, practices, or methods; high-level clerical experience includes document creation/word processing, office procedures, and financial management related to the unit.
- Or Education and Experience: A combination of college coursework in Criminal Justice, Business Management, Public Administration, Information Science, or related field and related experience equal to three (3) years. You must submit unofficial college transcripts to receive credit; include name, institution, degree, and date conferred.
Required Competencies
- Ability to work directly with inmates in a prison environment; exceptional interpersonal/customer service skills; ability to train/instruct others.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word; ability to create, edit, and manipulate data; ability to correspond via email; effective written and oral communication.
- Self-control and the ability to work in stressful or potentially violent situations; be alert, emotionally stable, and resilient under pressure.
- Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high-stakes interaction; ability to read and comprehend English; ability to communicate fluently in English in writing and speech; ability to create accessible documents following plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant technical experience with the State of Colorado; knowledge of library services; experience using an integrated library system (ILS).
- Experience selecting, processing, shelving, and/or maintaining library materials; experience working with a diverse population.

Conditions of Employment
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Possess a valid Colorado driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record; ability to operate a state vehicle as required.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Have no felony convictions, including offenses described under 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609; and have no sexual abuse history involving offenders or residents.
- Be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e-Verify; sponsorship is not provided for non-residents.
- Successfully complete six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including English reading comprehension and relevant competency assessments.
- Possess the physical ability to safely complete Defensive Tactics and related training; certain physical requirements apply (list of examples in original).
- Ability to travel and work rotating shifts (days, afternoons, nights) and be able to observe safety protocols (tuberculosis screening required for new employees).
