Location: This position will be working at the Rifle Correctional Center. This posting may be used to fill future vacancies at this location.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of a Regional Librarian, Programs Manager and Programs Supervisor, supervise the daily operation of a library in an adult correctional facility serving offenders of multiple classification levels. Design and implement the administrative operations of the library, including creating and revising procedures; writing, updating, and revising procedure manuals; planning, scheduling, and assigning work projects to offender library employees; developing work standards and monitoring work quality and flow; monitoring and planning for the expenditure of library funds; solving and proposing solutions to problems affecting library operations and work standards; and exercising discretion regarding the application of library policies and procedures. Assist in other areas of the facility during emergency situations/lockdowns. This position works directly with inmates in a state correctional facility.

  • Answer requests for information by conducting reference interviews, determining where to locate the desired information and executing the search.
  • Provide instruction to library users on information literacy and library skills; inform library users about interlibrary loan; screen requests for compatibility with selection criteria; instruct patrons on loan procedures; search incoming books for content and contraband.
  • Provide library service to inmates in Restricted Housing/diagnostic units who cannot visit the library.
  • Recommend materials for addition to the library collection to meet educational, informational and recreational needs of the inmate population.
  • Assign classification numbers and subject headings for new materials according to Dewey Decimal Classification, Abridged and Sears List of Subject Headings.
  • Monitor behavior of inmate library users, enforce security regulations and library rules, address rule infractions, and resolve conflicts between offenders.
  • Prepare annual funding requests and report annual library expenditures.
  • Compose and distribute monthly narrative and statistical reports.
  • Supervise inmate library clerks, assign tasks, monitor progress and workflow, schedule work, establish standards, and review final products.
  • Provide initial and ongoing training for inmate library clerks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of technical or high level clerical experience. Any work experience less than full time will be prorated. *Technical work is defined as skilled work in the practical application of specialized techniques, procedures, practices, or methods in order to accomplish tasks. **High Level clerical experience includes document creation, word processing; create and revise office procedures; compiling and formatting content for program materials; screening documents and supporting information to determine eligibility; accounting for the unit's allotted funds by authorizing operating expenditures.

OR: A combination of college coursework in Criminal Justice, Business Management, Public Administration, Information Science, or a related field and related experience equal to three (3) years. You must submit a copy of your unofficial college transcript with your name, college name, degree and date conferred to receive credit. If using education to meet minimum qualifications, attach the transcript to the application.

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word; ability to create, edit and manipulate data;
  • Ability to correspond and share documents via e-mail;

  • Self-control and ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations;
  • Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure;
  • Tolerance to stress and confinement;
  • Ability to read and comprehend English; fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Ability to create accessible documents following plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant technical experience with the State of Colorado;
  • Knowledge of library services;
  • Experience using an integrated library system (ILS);
  • Experience selecting, processing, shelving, and/or maintaining library materials;
  • Experience working with a diverse population.

Background and other requirements:

In order to process a background investigation, provide at least 10 years of the most current work experience unless related to the job is later than 10 years. Other requirements include passing a medical screening, drug testing (with exceptions for some occupations), criminal history review, verifications, and compliance with safety and COVID-related expectations as applicable.
