Location: This position will be working at the Rifle Correctional Center. This posting may be used to fill future vacancies at this location.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of a Regional Librarian, Programs Manager and Programs Supervisor, supervise the daily operation of a library in an adult correctional facility serving offenders of multiple classification levels. Design and implement the administrative operations of the library, including creating and revising procedures; writing, updating, and revising procedure manuals; planning, scheduling, and assigning work projects to offender library employees; developing work standards and monitoring work quality and flow; monitoring and planning for the expenditure of library funds; solving and proposing solutions to problems affecting the library operations and work standards; and exercising discretion regarding the application of library policies and procedures. Assist in other areas of the facility during emergencies.

Primary duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Answer requests for information by conducting reference interviews, locating information, and executing searches;
  • Provide instruction to library users on information literacy and library skills; inform users about interlibrary loan; screen requests for criteria, instruct on loan procedures; screen books for content and contraband;
  • Provide library service to inmates in Restricted Housing/diagnostic units who cannot visit the library;
  • Recommend materials for the library collection to meet the educational, informational and recreational needs of the inmate population;
  • Assign classification numbers and subject headings for new materials following Dewey Decimal Classification, Abridged and Sears lists;
  • Monitor behavior of inmate library users, enforce security regulations, file reports on rule infractions, and assist in conflict resolution;
  • Prepare annual funding requests and report annual expenditures;
  • Produce monthly narrative and statistical reports;
  • Supervise inmate library clerks, assign tasks, monitor progress, schedule work, and ensure quality of final products;
  • Provide initial and ongoing training for inmate library clerks;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of technical or high level clerical experience. This work experience must be clearly described in your work history to meet this requirement. Any work experience less than full time will be prorated.

Technical work is defined as skilled work in the practical application of specialized techniques, procedures, practices, or methods in order to accomplish tasks. The work is a direct extension of a professional field which requires an understanding of that field and typically reverts to a professional if not performed by a technician.

High level clerical experience includes: document creation, word processing; creating and revising office procedures; compiling and formatting content for program materials; screening documents for eligibility or authenticity; maintaining unit funds by authorizing operating expenditures.

OR:

Education and Experience: A combination of college coursework in Criminal Justice, Business Management, Public Administration, Information Science, or related field and related experience equal to three (3) years. You must submit an unofficial college transcript with your application to receive credit.   • Ability to create accessible documents and technical content following plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant technical experience with the State of Colorado
  • Knowledge of library services
  • Experience using an integrated library system (ILS)
  • Experience selecting, processing, shelving, and/or maintaining library materials
  • Experience working with a diverse population

Additional Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Possess a valid Colorado driver’s license and a safe driving history; ability to operate a state vehicle
  • High school diploma or GED
  • No felony convictions; background checks per policy
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States; e-Verify used
  • Successfully complete six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training
  • Physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics and related requirements
  • Willing to travel and work various shifts
  • TB screening required
