Description Of Job

Under the direction of the Regional Librarian, Programs Manager and Programs Supervisor, supervise the daily operation of a library in an adult correctional facility serving offenders of multiple classification levels. Design and implement the administrative operations of the library, including creating and revising procedures; writing, updating, and revising procedure manuals; planning, scheduling, and assigning work projects to offender library employees; developing work standards and monitoring work quality and flow; monitoring and planning for the expenditure of library funds; solving and proposing solutions to problems affecting library operations and work standards; and exercising discretion regarding the application of library policies and procedures. This position may assist in other areas of the facility during emergencies or lockdowns. This position works directly with inmates in a state correctional facility.

Primary Duties

  • Answer information requests by conducting reference interviews and locating desired information
  • Provide instruction on information literacy and library skills; inform about interlibrary loan; screen requests for selection criteria; instruct patrons on loan procedures; search incoming books for content and contraband
  • Provide library service to inmates in restricted housing/diagnostic units
  • Recommend materials to meet educational, informational and recreational needs of inmates
  • Assign classification numbers and subject headings per Dewey Decimal and related catalogs
  • Monitor inmate behavior, enforce security regulations and library rules; handle conflicts and write incident reports
  • Prepare annual funding requests and report annual expenditures
  • Compose and distribute monthly narrative and statistical reports
  • Supervise inmate library clerks and provide training
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of technical or high level clerical experience. Experience must be clearly described in the work history of your application; part-time work will be prorated.

Education and Experience: A combination of college coursework in Criminal Justice, Business Management, Public Administration, Information Science, or related field and related experience equal to three (3) years. You must submit a copy of your unofficial college transcript with your name, institution, degree, and date conferred to receive credit.   • Emotional resilience and alertness during shifts
  • Ability to read and comprehend English
  • Ability to create accessible documents following plain language guidelines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant technical experience with the State of Colorado
  • Knowledge of library services and experience with an integrated library system (ILS)
  • Experience selecting, processing, shelving, and maintaining library materials
  • Experience working with a diverse population
