Overview
Houston Public Library (HPL) is seeking a Senior Library Outreach Representative to join the Community Education and Engagement Team. The team provides library services, technology access, and outreach to underserved communities throughout the city via mobile library technology labs and other vehicles. Services include technology training, workforce development, digital literacy, STEM, early literacy education, and outreach. Programs may be offered in mobile labs or host sites. Workdays & Hours: Monday - Sunday, 8 am - 8 pm (varies). Subject to change.
Responsibilities
- Leads outreach activities for all ages promoting library services in diverse venues and audiences.
- Conducts general or specialized training in technology, literacy, STEM, and workforce development for internal and external audiences including children, teens, and adults.
- Develops and maintains age-appropriate programs and creates curriculum and teaching aids for technology.
- Acts as grade lead or secondary team member for Camp STREAM, including curriculum development, delivery, and logistics.
- Collaborates with community stakeholders to bring library services to the community.
- Resolves moderately complex problems, complaints, and requests.
- Researches and gathers information to resolve routine customer requests and responds via mail, telephone, email, and in person; uses computer and tracking system to process requests.
- Participates in special projects and supports the operations of the Houston Public Library and Community Engagement Team.
- Monitors and tracks Community Engagement inventory, including scheduling maintenance and replacing depleted items.
- Recommends changes to evaluation procedures, training manuals, and other course materials.
- Works closely with the team manager to ensure productivity.
- Requires frequent driving of a City of Houston vehicle and evening, weekend (Saturday and Sunday), and holiday shift work.

Working Conditions
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 40 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Educational Requirements
Requires a high school diploma or GED. An Associate Degree or higher is preferred.
Experience Requirements
Minimum two (2) years of customer service/training experience required. Proficient in Microsoft Office and Web 2.0 technology. A Class C driver’s license or better is required. Bilingual skills are preferred.

- Experience providing training to students of all ages.
- Knowledge and skills with technology including iPads, gaming, 3-D printers, etc.
- Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Experience working in a public library setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds when setting up events.
- Experience working with children and families.
- Fluency in a foreign language is highly preferred.
Note: Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants per Executive Order 1-6, where applicable.
