Overview

Houston Public Library (HPL) is seeking a Senior Library Outreach Representative to join the Community Education and Engagement Team. The team provides library services, technology access, and outreach services to underserved communities throughout Houston via specialized mobile library technology lab and other vehicles. Services include technology training, workforce development, digital literacy, STEM, early literacy education, and outreach in areas without a regular library location. Computer classes, robotics, making, storytime, ESL, summer camp, virtual tutoring, and access to HPL’s online resources are available with trained library staff. Service may be provided in mobile labs or host organization spaces. More about the unit: https://houstonlibrary.org/outreach.

The ideal candidate is flexible, innovative, a good communicator, possesses strong customer service and technology skills, and is willing to learn. Extensive training and customer service experience are required.

Position works within the Systemwide Programs division, Community Education and Engagement section. Workdays and hours are Monday–Sunday, 8 am–8 pm (varies) with shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Leads outreach activities for all ages promoting library services in a variety of venues for varied audiences.
  • Conducts general or specialized training, including technology, literacy, STEM, and workforce development for external and internal audiences (children, teens, and adults).
  • Develops and maintains age-appropriate programs and creates curriculum and teaching aids for technology.
  • Acts as grade lead or secondary team member for Camp STREAM (summer camp), including curriculum development, delivery, and logistics.
  • Collaborates with community stakeholders to bring library services to the community.
  • Resolves moderately complex problems, complaints, and/or requests.
  • Performs research and gathers information to resolve routine customer requests and responds via mail, phone, email, and in person; uses tracking systems as needed.
  • Participates in special projects and other duties essential to efficient operation of the Houston Public Library and the Community Engagement Team.
  • Monitors and maintains Community Engagement inventory, including scheduling maintenance and replenishing stock.
  • Recommends changes to evaluation procedures, training manuals, and course materials.
  • Works closely with the team manager to maintain team productivity.
  • Requires frequent driving of a City of Houston vehicle and evening, weekend (Saturday and Sunday), and holiday shift work.

Minimum Requirements

Educational Requirements
Requires a high school diploma or GED. An Associate’s degree or higher is preferred.

Experience Requirements
Minimum two (2) years of customer service/training experience required. Proficient with Microsoft Office and Web 2.0 technologies. A Class C driver’s license or better is required. Bilingual preferred.

  • Experience providing training to students of all ages.
  • Knowledge and skills with technology including iPads, gaming, 3-D printers, etc.
  • Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Experience in a public library setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds when setting up events.
  • Experience working with children and families.
  • Fluency in a foreign language is highly preferred to better serve diverse communities.

Special Notes
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the qualifications for competent discharge of duties in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
