Position Overview
Library Assistants (Library Assistant I) provide support in circulation, technical processing, and other library duties. They interact with patrons, maintain a customer‑service‑driven mindset, and work under close supervision. As they gain experience they may take on greater responsibilities and can be eligible for promotion to Level II.
Locations and Employment Types
This recruitment establishes an eligibility list for full‑time, part‑time, limited‑term, and extra‑help vacancies at any of Napa County Library locations: American Canyon, Calistoga, Napa, or Yountville. Seats are available for up to one year.
Assignments at the Calistoga Library require bilingual Spanish/English skills. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply. Eligible employees who pass the bilingual assessments may receive a bilingual pay differential.
Employment classifications:
- Permanent Full‑time: 40 hours per week, benefitted.
- Permanent Part‑time: Less than 40 hours per week, benefitted.
- Extra Help: Non‑benefited, up to 29 hours per week (up to 1,000 hours fiscal year). Extra help employees are not eligible for promotional opportunities open to regular part‑time and full‑time employees.
Responsibilities
Library Assistants perform the following duties:
- Assist patrons with circulation, including checking items in and out.
- Process new library materials in the technical processing area.
- Maintain the organization and accessibility of library shelves and resources.
- Support library programs, events, and technology services such as computers and Wi‑Fi.
- Handle customer inquiries with a professional, courteous approach.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Library Supervisors.
Qualifications
The following qualifications are required or strongly preferred:
- Experience: One year of general clerical experience.
- Education: Completion of twelfth grade or equivalent, supplemented by specialized library clerical training.
- License or Certificate: Valid California Driver’s License, maintained in good standing for the duration of employment.
Recruitment Process

Supplemental questions will be scored by subject‑matter experts during the week of November 17, 2025. Selected candidates will be invited to an oral panel interview tentatively scheduled for the week of December 1, 2025. Successful applicants will be placed on the eligibility list for current and future positions for up to one year.
