Definition: Perform a variety of entry-level administrative and customer service work related to the circulation of materials, outreach, and various library technical services functions. This position directly serves the public in the Circulation Department; assists patrons with their accounts and may provide collection support services in the Technical Services Department.
Principal Duties: • Answer routine informational questions and refer more difficult or technical questions to appropriate library staff. • Attend meetings and trainings as required. • Check materials in and out of the library. • Empty book returns. • Identify overdue materials; process overdue notices; collect, record, and process fines according to Library policy. • Issue and renew library cards. • Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public. • Maintain statistical records of Library activities as required. • Prepare library for opening and closing. • Prepare the Circulation Desk for opening and closing, restocking supplies, and updating hold items. • Provide customer service for the Circulation Department at the Circulation desk or Help Desk. • Read and respond to emails from staff and patrons. • Participate in outreach in community and outreach organizing, restocking, and preparation.
Depending upon assignment, may perform these Essential Duties: • Assist and instruct patrons in the use of computer software programs and the Internet. • Assist in the processing of new library materials; enter data related to the ordering, receiving, and invoicing of new library materials. • Assist with shifting and inventory of library items. • Identify overdue, damaged or missing items; notify patrons of and collect fines for damages, overdue, or missing pieces; prepare items for mending; and update bibliographic records. • Locate information in assigned area using computerized databases, library materials, or other tools. • Prepare books for withdrawal as designated by selectors or identified as damaged or outdated. • Prepare materials for bindery, perform minor repairs, and replace barcode and RFID tags. • Record and compile statistics. • Search database sources for requested materials not owned by the Library. • Search for and process requests for patrons in print and non-print materials. • Search for claimed returns. • Search the Internet, download, and print information on various publications and materials. • Serve at public service desk in assigned department; interview patrons by telephone or in person responding to service requests.
Working Environment: Work is in a standard library environment, which includes exposure to dust. Work requires standing, walking, bending and stooping, use of hands to make repetitive grasping motions, light lifting of up to 30 pounds, pushing and pulling of book carts, and sufficient vision to clearly read book labels. May require climbing at least two steps on a ladder or step stool and reaching above shoulder level. Work requires ability to read, write, and use mathematical reasoning at a level sufficient to perform alphabetical and numeric sorting of books. Work requires ability to hear and communicate orally with library patrons. Work requires working days, evenings and weekends on a regular basis. Work frequently involves confidentiality, reasoning, problem solving, and attention to detail. Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to at least one year of experience in general office and/or customer service. Special Qualifications: Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency preferred.
