Job Overview As a Printing and Reprographics Specialist within Printing Graphics and Direct Mail’s (PGDM) Capitol Hill Publishing section, you will play a crucial role in printing high‑priority jobs for Senators, committees, support offices, and more. Your responsibilities include using a state‑of‑the‑art Print MIS system for efficient tracking, record‑keeping, and inventory management of print production. The position is responsible for the fast turnaround of a wide range of printing and bindery products such as books, stationery, programs, banners, charts, memo pads, certificates, and more. By joining our team, you will become an integral part of PGDM’s vital support system for reprographic needs.
Key Accountabilities / Essential Job Duties
Utilize machine interface to manipulate color and file structure to prepare for high volume production.
Operate, manage, and troubleshoot high volume production printing equipment, ensuring conformity to established standards and applicable specifications while establishing priorities.
Perform final finishing and bindery work for all printed materials on all stages of completion.
Utilize a Print Management Information System (MIS) to track and report inventories and supplies, production resources to ensure deadlines are met on work requests.
Produce electronic files from hard copy documentation in a variety of formats and upload to respective office’s file exchange server.
Other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications Required Education High school diploma (or GED).
Required Work Experience
One to three years of experience in print production, bindery operations, and mailing practices.
Required Special Skills / Knowledge
May conduct a skills assessment to better understand applicant’s proficiency in key areas relevant to the role.
Familiarity with, or ability to learn, departmental rules, regulations, procedures, and functions, including policies set by the Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Committee on Ethics or similar policies.
Knowledge of equipment, computers, and relevant software/Web applications, spreadsheets, and databases.
Knowledge of modern printing and reprographics principles and practices.
Knowledge of paper, inks, and other supplies used in printing production.
Ability to meet established quality control standards.
Ability to inspect and coordinate work efficiently.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co‑workers, and customers.
Ability to communicate effectively.
May require availability for sudden recall in response to emergency events affecting the Senate campus/community, including after‑hour or weekend work, and potential deployment to alternate sites.
Desired Qualifications
Wide format printing experience: demonstrated expertise in handling and operating wide format printing equipment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Suite: ability to effectively use Microsoft Office applications for document preparation and formatting.
Experience with Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Illustrator: familiarity with industry‑standard software for creating and editing print‑ready files.
Knowledge of imposition tools: experience working with imposition tools like Quite Imposing to optimize printing layouts.
Understanding of RIPS (Raster Image Processors) to efficiently process, gang jobs, and adjust color.
Working Conditions
Position requires onsite presence during Senate sessions; may require work during government shutdowns, inclement weather, holidays, evenings, nights, weekends, and late sessions.
Frequent physical effort such as walking, sitting, bending, standing, and lifting objects up to 50 pounds.
Working in confined spaces (bending and crawling).
Hazards include moving machinery, exposure to chemicals (inks and solvents), paper dust, and excessive noise.
Working on ladders to install signage.
Operation of powered industrial forklift, pallet jacks, and scissor lift.
Employee must wear uniforms.
Conditions of Employment
U.S. citizen.
Lawfully admitted for permanent residence and seeking citizenship.
Admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. 1157 or granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. 1158.
Filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible.
