Job Summary

Tenure-track faculty position in multi-faculty, highly visible, NASM-accredited music program. Provide high quality and engaging instruction in freshman and sophomore courses in Choral Music, Jazz and Contemporary Voice, Jazz Piano, and classroom teaching in the music program’s core curriculum.

Position typically requires a teaching load of the equivalent of 30 credits/academic year. Primary emphasis of the position is to provide effective leadership and organization for a comprehensive choral and vocal program including classical, jazz, and popular styles.

Priority is on excellent teaching including online instruction, synchronous delivery, along with advising, assessment, service, student recruitment, curriculum development, articulation with high school and university faculty and professional development activities. Division responsibilities are described in the faculty employment policies section of the NWC Board Policy Manual.

Responsibilities

  • Direct vocal jazz and contemporary vocal ensembles
  • Teach and/or oversee applied lessons in jazz, contemporary and classical voice, jazz piano, and composition
  • Assist in the on-going development and assessment of curriculum
  • Develop course syllabi for assigned courses and effective varied instruction techniques that promote learning and address student achievement of expected learning outcomes
  • Evaluate student performance and achievement of course, program, and all-college student learning outcomes
  • Recommend appropriate texts and teaching aids, which will be of the most value to the teaching-learning process
  • Advise students and support students in program-related activities
  • Post and observe office hours for the purposes of academic advising and student consultation. Hold office hours at times that support student success. Meet with students as needed by appointment.
  • Advise and assist students during the ongoing registration process.
  • Serve on College committees as requested, elected or assigned
  • Contribute to program, division and department meetings and program events.
  • Maintain a high level of content knowledge and engage in ongoing professional development in relation to one’s field and teaching.
  • Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge and competence in the appropriate academic disciplines.
  • Demonstrate mutual respect and civility, and coordinate activities to promote the highest level of student learning and productive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administration, and community members
  • Contribute to positive program articulations with schools and colleges
  • Actively participate in assisting the College in maintaining standards required for accreditation
  • Actively participate in Music program recruiting activities
  • Work closely with other music faculty
  • Assist others on an as-needed basis
  • Participate in college activities
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Training and Experience

Master’s degree in music from a regionally accredited college or university

  • Two years of successful classroom teaching experience in music at the collegiate level
  • Successful choral ensemble leadership at the collegiate level
  • A high level of personal artistry in the areas of jazz piano and voice
  • Leadership experience with music festivals and/or camps
  • Activity in professional organizations

Proficiency in written, oral and interpersonal communication

Skills in developing rapport with students

Experience in promotion of learning in and/or out of the classroom

Demonstrated willingness to participate in a collaborative team approach to education

Demonstrated commitment to assessment of student academic achievement

Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development

Evidence of ability and/or willingness for distance education delivery of courses

Demonstrated ability to effectively work independently and collaboratively

Preferred Training & Experience

Evidence of the following:

  • Published materials, such as compositions and arrangements
  • Familiarity with American popular vocal styles
  • Facility with music technology (i.e., computer-based instruction, basic live sound reinforcement and recording)
  • Ability to design and implement concerts and other music-related events
  • Proficiency in computer applications
  • Advising and student support experience
  • Demonstrated understanding and a commitment to the community college mission
  • Ability to plan and facilitate student extracurricular student activities and trips
  • Experience in delivering distance education, hybrid and/or online classes

Licensing Requirements

Successful applicant will be required to pass an acceptable criminal background check

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subject to field work, travel, and weekend work.
