Serco is hiring an Experienced Engineering Technician to support U.S. Navy ships in Newport News, VA. The role involves performing electrical work, troubleshooting, testing, and maintaining engineering data to ensure safe and effective shipboard operations.

Responsibilities

Perform troubleshooting and correct malfunctions.

Conduct various tests or experiments, selecting, setting up, and operating standard test equipment and recording test data.

Perform electrical work on ships, boats, and marine equipment.

Repair electrical wiring, restoring power to ship engines and navigation systems, and secure work areas to prevent electrical shock.

Gather and maintain records of engineering data such as tests, drawings, etc.; compute values using specified formulas; plot data and draw simple curves and graphs.

Perform routine tests such as tensile or hardness tests; operate and adjust simple test equipment; record test data.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent.

Ability to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret Clearance.

Ability to obtain and gain access to shipyards (NAVSTA & DBIDS), undergo a background investigation, and pass a drug screening.

Ability to obtain an OSHA 10 certification.

Ability to get respirator qualified and wear PPE throughout the work shift.

Five years of experience in electrical work in a related field and/or shipboard.

Experience managing a crew of 6–10 people.

Five years of experience in the following areas:

Competency attaching fiber optic, RJ‑45, DB type connectors.

Read drawings at a tradesman level.

Provide QCI instruction to lower technicians.

Implement safety programs/SRAR Qual/CP.

Preliminary QA testing, MCTs, space closeouts.

Multipin competence.

Electrical testing requirements (e.g., ground checks, RSPT testing).

Layout & cutting of electrical enclosures, electrical hook‑ups & multiple meter knowledge.

Reading drawings at an apprentice level.

Band/pack MCTs/RISE.

Layout & mount small equipment as needed.

Basic knowledge of tools, QA documents, meter.

Safety: Actively participates in safety surveillances & walk‑thrus.

Familiarization with NAVSEA standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of electrical repair, fabrication, and installation.

Ability to work in high heat spaces, climb shipyard dry dock stairs/ladders, work in kneeling positions for cable runs under false decking.

Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds (80% of the shift involving carrying, pushing, pulling up to 40 pounds) while standing, crouching, or walking.

Strong attention to safety.

Willingness to travel up to 25% to various work sites.

Additional Desired Experience and Skills

An active DoD Secret clearance.

An OSHA Certification.

Fiber optic certification.
