Job Summary The Utilities Mechanic (UM) is a 3-tier level, Career Ladder position. The Environmental Services Department is accepting applications for a Utilities Mechanic (UM). We are seeking to find candidates at the top tier level UM Senior or with verifiable Industrial Maintenance/Mechanical experience. In the event we are not able to secure a UM Sr. or related Industrial Maintenance/Mechanical experienced candidate, we are next able to extend offers to the mid-level tier (UM II) or with verifiable Industrial Maintenance/Mechanical experience. In the event we are not able to extend an offer to a UM II, we are next able to extend offers to candidates at the entry-level tier (UM I) with mechanical experience outlined below.
Skilled mechanical work in the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of municipal wastewater equipment and infrastructure. An employee in this classification utilizes knowledge of mechanical systems, basic electricity, and plumbing to locate and correct malfunctions of wastewater lift station equipment, force mains, wet wells, and treatment plant equipment and associated utilities systems.
Work is performed under supervision with independence in the application of technical procedures of the trades.
The UM Senior position mentors Utilities Mechanics I and II and serves as a lead on assigned projects and may be assigned supervisory responsibilities during the supervisor's absence.
Entry level, Utilities Mechanic I = $21.21 hourly

Repairs, rebuilds, and services wastewater treatment plant pumps, gear drives, and other related equipment
Implements Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) procedures following the departments SOP

Independently performs maintenance activities (preventative, predictive, corrective) on equipment associated with the wastewater reclamation facility and lift stations; items include (but not limited to) various types of pumps, (submersible, centrifugal, diaphragm, piston, positive displacement), gearboxes, biosolids equipment, barscreens, grit systems, blowers, belt filter press, conveyors shakers, induced draft (ID) fan, Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer, Dryer Drum Inspection, etc.
Performs laser alignment/sheave alignment on rotating equipment

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work Environment 10% inside a climate controlled building; 90% outside which includes driving.
Physical Requirements The essential functions of the job require: sitting approximately two (2) hours per day, standing approximately four (4) hours per day, and walking approximately two (2) hours per day. The job also requires frequent: bending/stooping, grasping, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling and occasional fine manipulations, working at heights, working in confined space, reaching, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 60 pounds, and on rare occasions lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
Sensory Requirements Hearing: Ability to detect proper equipment operation, detect alarms, and understand what others are saying in normal conversation and on the telephone. Perform line repair (up to 30" diameter) under supervision of Utility Mechanic (UM) II or UM Senior
Employ proper sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) procedures
Disassemble, install, and perform mechanical repairs under supervision of UM II or UM Senior
Set up mobile generators under supervision of UM II or UM Senior (3-phase – plug and play)
Maintain air release valves under supervision of UM II or UM Senior
Perform preventative maintenance on equipment; duties include greasing, changing oil, changing filters, maintaining proper lubrication levels, cleaning, and painting
Perform minor troubleshooting of mechanical equipment
Complete a minimum of 80 hours annual apprenticeship in the wastewater reclamation facility (WWRF) or Lift Station Program – Full 8 hour days
The employee and supervisor will establish a tentative annual apprenticeship calendar to include dates to reach the minimum 80 hour requirement
Extra hours may be required based on the supervisor's observation of apprentice's ability to understand new information, proficiency, and feedback
Annually, complete a minimum of 40 hours of cross‑training at the WWRF or Lift Stations
The employee and supervisor will establish a tentative annual calendar to include dates to reach the minimum 40 hour requirement
Extra hours may be required based on the supervisor's observation of employee's ability to understand new information, proficiency, and feedback
Work in adverse weather conditions as well as emergency situations including holidays and weekends
Skilled in proper use of mechanic's tools and shop equipment

Knowledge of advanced methods and techniques used in the:
installation, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of mechanical equipment
maintenance and repair of sewer collection systems and wastewater reclamation facility
Ability to:
perform repairs to various components, piping, pumps associated with chemical feed systems including methanol, sodium hypochlorite (bleach), sodium bisulfite, Peracetic Acid, etc.
troubleshoot minor electrical issues using a volt/ohm meter and make minor repairs
set up and operation of by-pass pumps and generator
train and supervise UM I in proper repair and maintenance techniques
perform tasks with minimal direct supervision
plan projects that include excavations or lifting/rigging involving a crane

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work Environment 10% inside a climate controlled building; 90% outside which includes driving.
Physical Requirements The essential functions of the job require: sitting approximately two (2) hours per day, standing approximately four (4) hours per day, and walking approximately two (2) hours per day. The job also requires frequent: bending/stooping, grasping, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling and occasional fine manipulations, working at heights, working in confined space, reaching, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 60 pounds, and on rare occasions lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
Sensory Requirements Hearing: Ability to detect proper equipment operation, detect alarms, and understand what others are saying in normal conversation and on the telephone. Speaking: Ability to communicate orally with others and speak effectively on the telephone. Seeing: Ability to see and read computer monitor screens, operate a vehicle and equipment, and read normal print.
Driving Requirements Frequent driving and possession of a valid Florida Class B CDL with Tanker Endorsement.
Technology The work requires ability to operate telephones, smart phones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and/or laptop computers, calculators and all associated software.
Other Ability to operate dump trucks, crane truck, bobcat excavators, forklift, aerial lift, and backhoes.
Tools Proficiency with hand tools, shovels, crescent and pipe wrenches, ratchets, hammers, electric and gas saws, tubing cutters, drills, and power gate valve turner.
