Admiral Baker Golf Course is a bustling 36-hole military golf facility located in the central part of San Diego, California. Set alongside the beautiful San Diego River, the property consists of two 18-hole courses that provide a challenging layout for all levels of golfers. Originally built by the US Navy in 1957 as 27 holes and expanded to 36 holes in the late 1960’s, Admiral Baker GC has become one of the most popular courses in Southern California. The championship North course recently hosted the 2023 Armed Forces Championships and is consistently ranked among the best military courses in the world. Although the main focus is to provide excellent playing conditions for our current and retired military, the course is also open to the public and maintains high participation year-round.

The golf maintenance team is looking to for an Assistant Superintendent to work closely alongside our amazing team of turf professionals and the Regional Golf Course Superintendent to strategize, coordinate, and implement a successful maintenance program. This role involves managing a team of over 20+ staff members, overseeing pesticide applications, work schedules, irrigation, budgets, equipment, and safety training. We are looking for a hard-working and energetic individual who wants to succeed in the industry. Applicants with a positive attitude, strong work ethic and willingness to succeed is a must. The ideal Assistant Superintendent will confidently assist in managing all facets of the course maintenance in a team environment and will play an integral part in providing the highest quality conditions for our military and guests.

The South course at Admiral Baker is scheduled for a full course renovation early in 2027. The renovation includes all new lakes, irrigation system and new greens/tees/bunkers throughout. The Assistant Superintendent will be exposed to numerous parts of the design and planning process and will play a critical role during the construction phase and grow-in of the project. This would be an excellent opportunity for an individual who is interested in adding renovation experience to their resume.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS:

Two Audubon certified 18-hole courses (North & South) with a combined 170+ acres of maintained turf.

Staff size - Currently 24 employees and expanding. Most staff are full time with only 1-2 part time staff.

Equipment type - Primarily Toro reel mowers and John Deere rotary mowers. The course has continued to invest in upgrading its fleet over the recent years.

Irrigation system - Toro Irrigation with Flowtronix Pump Stations (A new Watertronix pump station will be installed on the South Course in Spring 2026)

Greens - North Course greens are bentgrass and South course greens are currently poa/bent mix but will be converted to bentgrass during the upcoming renovation.

Tees/Fairways/Rough – Warm season with a mix of Kikuyu, Bermuda and Paspalum

Year round play with no over-seeding

Ranked as one of the top military courses in the world.

Knowledge of current agronomic practices including cultural practices performed on both warm and cool season grasses.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead, train, and manage a staff of 24+ team members

Oversee daily course setup and monitor playing conditions

Ensure proper water management practices and communicate with the irrigation lead/team for course irrigation setup.

Plan and follow through with ongoing course projects

Assist in budget tracking, scheduling, and course project planning along with procurement of needed supplies and parts for an efficient operation.

Effectively communicate daily with the golf operations department and pro shop.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

2-5 years of golf maintenance or turfgrass experience in a related field.

Degree/Certificate from an accredited Turfgrass Management Program or related field

Experience as Assistant Superintendent preferred or experience in a lead management role is a plus.

Ability to obtain a California pesticide license within 90 days of employment
