The New York Times is looking for an experienced and versatile journalist to join the National desk as a reporter covering Southern California, a region of 23 million residents with outsized political and cultural influence across the world. The role requires discovering and cultivating regional news sources and contacts, writing quickly and precisely, committing to new forms of storytelling, and writing in a variety of formats while juggling deadline demands.
Working in this role means you must be as comfortable covering immediate breaking news as you are writing thoughtful, in‑depth pieces about events and issues. Collaboration and eagerness to work with Times colleagues across the newsroom are essential. This is an in‑office position based in Los Angeles, with regular attendance in the office four days each week; some flexibility to work remotely is possible per departmental guidance.
Responsibilities
Deliver newsy stories that help readers better understand the region.
Develop local sources to land exclusive stories and establish beat authority.
Monitor news and deliver a steady stream of story ideas that explain the region.
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth.
Report to the California Editor.
Basic Qualifications
5+ years of experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization.
Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgments.
A portfolio that includes breaking news, enterprise, visual story formats, and analysis across a range of subjects.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience promoting a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
Deep interest in Southern California.
Spanish language fluency.

Compensation
The annual base pay range for this role is $113,270.67 - $140,000 USD.
