Judiciary Clerk
– Charles County District Court, La Plata, MD (11 Washington Avenue) Salary : $50,324 per year Closing Date : January 22, 2026 Positions available: Full time, Non‑Exempt Essential Job Functions
The Judiciary Clerk enters data into the court’s case management systems, answers public inquiries, may serve as a backup courtroom clerk, and performs miscellaneous filing duties. Responsibilities
Receive and enter case filings into the computer system. Process criminal/traffic, civil, and domestic violence case filings and schedule trial/hearing dates. Enter officer dates into the officer portal. Greet and assist customers at the counter and over the phone with general court information. Answer inquiries relating to civil, domestic violence, criminal, and traffic matters and provide resources. Serve as a backup courtroom clerk when required. Perform other miscellaneous duties such as filing, boxing old files, stripping files, and assisting clerks as requested. Complete any other assigned duties. Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent. One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations, criminal justice, parole, probation, legal, or financial services. A Bachelor’s degree may substitute for the required work experience. A Paralegal or Associates degree or 60 college credits may substitute for the required work experience. A Paralegal Certificate may substitute for the required work experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General office practices, procedures, and equipment. Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary. Basic English and arithmetic skills. Customer service skills: handling problems tactfully, active listening, empathy, problem solving, and communication. Attention to detail and accuracy. Typing proficiency on a personal computer. Abilities
Use standard office equipment (personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, register, scanner, fax machine). Maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems. Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, law enforcement, attorneys, and other court officials. Follow departmental rules, regulations, and procedures. Provide assistance and guidance to others politely and efficiently. Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement, and attorneys. Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for assignments. Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Exercise independent judgment in applying policies, procedures, rules, and laws to situations. Apply job‑related terminology, policies, and laws to define problems, collect data, establish facts, record data, complete forms, and provide customer information. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public. Work within time constraints, meet fixed deadlines, and demonstrate good organizational skills. Physical Requirements
Light work; may need to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally or 10 pounds frequently, or negligible force for most tasks. Software and Computer Skills
Microsoft Office, MDEC, Outlook, File & Serve; daily use required for data entry and filings. Selection Process
