
We are seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to manage and lead on-site construction activities for retail projects throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. This role is ideal for a driven field leader who understands the fast-paced nature of retail construction, including ground-up stores, big-box retail, and tenant improvement (TI) buildouts. The Superintendent will be responsible for ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
Position Overview:
The Construction Superintendent will serve as the primary on-site leader, coordinating all daily field operations and subcontractors while maintaining clear communication with project management, clients, and inspectors. This role requires strong organizational skills, technical construction knowledge, and the ability to manage multiple trades under tight retail schedules and opening deadlines.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee and manage all on-site construction activities for retail projects from mobilization through project closeout
Supervise subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors to ensure productivity, quality, and schedule adherence
Enforce jobsite safety programs and maintain OSHA compliance at all times
Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and shop drawings
Coordinate inspections with local authorities and ensure compliance with building codes and retail brand standards
Drive short-interval scheduling and maintain daily, weekly, and look-ahead schedules
Conduct regular site meetings and communicate progress, issues, and solutions with project managers and ownership
Manage punch lists, quality control checks, and final turnover to clients
Ensure proper documentation including daily reports, RFIs, and field logs
Lead store opening preparations and final completion milestones
Identify and resolve field conflicts and constructability issues proactively
Qualifications:
Minimum of 5+ years of experience as a Construction Superintendent, preferably in retail construction
Demonstrated experience delivering ground-up retail, big-box retail, or tenant improvement projects
Strong understanding of MEP coordination specific to retail environments
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and construction documents
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Proven ability to manage fast-track schedules and multiple subcontractors
OSHA 30 certification preferred
Proficiency with construction management software (Procore, PlanGrid, Bluebeam, or similar preferred)
