The Managing Clerk provides docketing, calendaring, filing services, research, and analysis to the firm’s litigation attorneys and paralegals on procedural issues to assist with compliance with court rules and other litigation-based obligations. The Managing Clerk also assists the Managing Attorney in playing a vital role in litigation‑specific risk management to help with ethical and legal obligations compliance.

Position Overview The Managing Clerk provides docketing, calendaring, filing services, research, and analysis to the firm’s litigation attorneys and paralegals on procedural issues to assist with compliance with court rules and other litigation-based obligations. The Managing Clerk also assists the Managing Attorney in playing a vital role in litigation‑specific risk management to help with ethical and legal obligations compliance.

Duties and Responsibilities Primary

Oversee and maintain the daily operations of the firm’s docketing/calendaring system

Perform daily quality control review of all filings docketed and calendared within the docketing system

Provide guidance and insight regarding state and federal electronic filing processes

Serve as the primary point of contact between the office’s litigation attorneys and the courts; manage the filing of all court documents, reviewing them for compliance with court rules and procedures.

Review court dockets and search for sample briefs and pleadings relating to similar legal issues to assist attorneys in drafting litigation documents.

Monitor rules and procedures and stay informed of changes that impact docketing and calendaring functions.

Set and review alerts for new lawsuits filed against current and prospective firm clients and ensure applicable partners are notified.

Retrieve court dockets and documents in state and federal courts as requested by attorneys.

Liase with court personnel in NY and other jurisdictions and communicate information to attorneys and paralegals.

Assist with litigation‑based projects including, but not limited to, alerts management and knowledge management.

Working Conditions

Job is performed in a typical office environment, but is subject to time pressures and constraints, and is often dependent on input from others.

Long hours are required periodically.

Minimum Qualification Education

High School diploma required; college degree preferred.

Experience

A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a Managing Attorney/Managing Clerk’s Office.

Special Knowledge

In‑depth knowledge of applicable Federal and state procedural rules and practices.

Technical Skills

Highly proficient in the utilization of court‑related databases, such as CourtAlert/CompuLaw/Milana, PACER, Bloomberg Law and LexMachina.

Attributes

Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities, with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with superior presentation abilities. Ability to effectively communicate complex or detailed concepts and information to diverse audiences, both orally and in writing. Demonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.

The full time base annual salary for this position in the New York market is expected to range between $160,000 - $180,000. Please note that the actual compensation may vary from posting based on geographic location, work experience, education and/or skill level. The posted salary is the range Vinson & Elkins in good faith believes to be the possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in New York and may be modified in the future.
