
Assistant Estimator - Commercial Preconstruction

Job Overview As a member of our dynamic Commercial Preconstruction team, you will join other experienced employee-owners in producing estimates for external clients from our varied portfolio which includes projects in housing, hospitality, higher education, healthcare, and other commercial spaces. Clients value the Wright-Ryan Preconstruction team for our firsthand understanding of the construction market, cutting edge estimating tools, and intense knowledge of buildings, systems, and costs to help create beautiful and timeless buildings that fit cost and schedule constraints. The Assistant Estimator will support the project team through the project design process of space (architecture), time (schedule), and dollars (estimates) for an owner to see how the project can fulfill their vision. Prior to design starting, we often describe a building or project for an owner in terms of site parameters, foundations, structural and MEP systems, exterior cladding, and finishes, and then estimate a cost/square foot or unit, along with a duration to completion. This role offers an excellent opportunity to learn and grow in the construction industry while contributing to the success of our team.
Job Requirements
Support Preconstruction by completing a variety of project estimating functions including outreach to subcontractors for estimate information at various stages of the estimate process.
Develop detailed quantity take offs of various scopes during the stages of the design process.
Support and attend project meetings with team members, customers, architects, and subcontractors. Document and distribute meeting minutes, follow up on action items and develop agendas and lead meetings as needed.
Develop pre-construction schedules and manage the subcontractor database including qualifying subcontractors.
Coordinate email correspondence containing important project related documents and distribute to the appropriate pre-construction team members.
Assist in maintaining an inventory of documents and plan drafts for easy retrieval by pre-construction team members.
Attend project close out meetings and work with Project Engineers and Project Managers on hand offs.
Education, Experience, And Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (recent graduates are encouraged to apply).
One to three years of related experience in the construction field preferred with relevant internships, co-op experience, or academic projects desirable.
Familiarity with construction processes, materials, and safety standards gained through academic projects, internships, or previous experience.
Exceptional customer service skills and ability to work in a collaborative, team environment.
Ability to work in a clear, organized, and well documented manner to ensure compliance with contract documents, cost, schedule, and quality objectives.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to manage projects from start to finish with excellent attention to detail while working under pressure of deadlines.
Ability to quickly learn new concepts and adapt to a fast-paced work environment.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, plans, and specifications is desirable.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and technology (Word, Excel and Outlook) with experience in construction software (estimating, takeoffs, scheduling, and modeling) preferred.
