Position Overview The Office of the Public Defender is hiring Social Service Practitioners (SSP) to provide professional social work services to adult and juvenile clients and their families as they navigate through the criminal justice system. SSPs investigate and/or support cases involving clients who may have physical or psychological issues, write mitigation reports and mental health plans, appear and testify in court, attend Special Attendance Review Board (SARB) meetings, participate in outreach events, and may act as preceptors to social work interns.
Role Levels
Social Service Practitioner I (SSP I)
– Trainee class. Works under close supervision while acquiring necessary skills. Applicants within three (3) months of completing their Master of Social Work degree will be considered.
Social Service Practitioner II (SSP II)
– Requires a completed Master of Social Work degree and completion of the training period. Employees must qualify for promotion within 12 months or be terminated.
Social Service Practitioner III (SSP III)
– Requires a completed Master of Social Work degree and 3 years (6,240 hours) of service as SSP II or equivalent county classification. Service hours as an SSP I do not count toward the requirement.
Assignments Assignments may be made at Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, or Victorville. Applicants must be willing to accept placement at any one of these locations.
Training and Advancement
SSP I salary range: $66,476.80–$86,923.20 annually; eligible for promotion to SSP II.
SSP II salary range: $69,742.40–$98,259.20 annually; automatically advance to SSP III after 3 full years (6,240 hours) of service.
Conditions of Employment
Pre‑employment background check required.
Must be willing to visit clients in homes, jails, prisons, state hospitals, and other settings.
Travel throughout the county may be required.
County does not consider candidate who requires visa sponsorship.
Experience and Education
SSP I – Must be within three (3) months of completing an accredited Master of Social Work degree.
SSP II – Must possess a completed Master of Social Work degree from an accredited university. No prior experience required.
SSP III – Must possess a completed Master of Social Work degree from an accredited university and have 3 years full‑time service as SSP II or equivalent.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Experience working with indigent clients and familiarity with available social services programs.
Knowledge of San Bernardino County school district programs (MAP, SAFE, LET).
Strong communication and case management skills.
