The Ulster County Public Defender’s Office ensures that the constitutional right to counsel is a reality for eligible individuals, regardless of income. We represent clients in criminal, Family Court, and appellate matters when liberty, family integrity, and due process are at stake. Our Office is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of full‑time and part‑time criminal defense attorneys, Family Court attorneys, paralegals, legal aides, an investigator, and Senior Case Managers. This is a full-time, on‑site role based in Kingston, NY, for an Assistant Public Defender. The Assistant Public Defender will provide legal representation to indigent individuals charged with criminal offenses. Key responsibilities include preparing and conducting legal research, advising clients on legal rights and options, representing clients in court proceedings, negotiating plea agreements, and advocating for clients at trials or other legal hearings. The role also involves collaboration with court staff, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to ensure fair and efficient legal processes. Qualifications

Expertise in Criminal Law Experience in Felony Criminal Defense and working within Courts Skills in providing Legal Assistance and client advocacy Ability to handle caseloads efficiently with attention to detail Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to practice law in the state of New York Strong communication and courtroom advocacy skills Familiarity with the criminal justice system and public defender work processes Commitment to serving marginalized and underrepresented communities
