NCAA Guidelines

Job Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Acting on behalf of and in consultation with the editor-in-chief, duties include:
  • Training and managing the news reporters for the Indiana Statesman.
  • Developing story ideas, planning stories for publication and assisting writers in applying good editorial judgment.
  • Editing all news stories and submitting them to the copy desk by deadline on production days.
  • Providing additional content as needed, such as information for briefs, graphics, etc.
  • Assisting the editor-in-chief in recruiting reporters.
  • Coordinating with photographers to supply coverage for events, and graphic designers to provide additional visual content for the newspaper.
  • Assigning reporters to beats or areas of coverage.
  • Assigning stories as needed to ensure successful and timely completion.
  • Providing reporters with feedback on their stories.
  • Determining whether stories need additional reporting and communicating that information to the reporters.
  • Ensuring all reporters understand and adhere to standards for professional and ethical behavior.
  • Developing and maintaining a reporter's production schedule.
  • Attending budget meetings set by the editor-in-chief.
  • Meeting with reporters on a weekly basis to determine content for newspaper.
  • Working with the editor-in-chief and the student publications director to determine appropriate training needed for reporters.
  • Checking messages and other communication, including Statesman email, on a daily basis.
  • Responding to public inquiries as needed.
  • Working with other members of the Student Media staff as appropriate.
  • Other duties as needed or assigned by the editor-in-chief.
