About the Role The Senior Director of Buildings and Grounds is a key leadership position within the district, responsible for the direct, day-to-day management of the Buildings and Grounds department. This role ensures that all physical school facilities are maintained in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, environmental sustainability, and safety, so they are ready for full educational use at all times. The Senior Director provides crucial supervision and leadership to all custodial and maintenance personnel, guiding them to provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, and efficient environment in which to learn and grow. Key responsibilities include directing the district's Preventative Maintenance Program, preparing all departmental bid documents, and coordinating with external agencies and contractors. Critically, the Senior Director will champion the district's mission by ensuring all departmental operations align with Board Policy 7:12: Ensuring Racial and Educational Equity and other District goals.
Supervision, Training, and Personnel Management
Directly supervises, selects, assigns, schedules, trains, and evaluates all maintenance and grounds staff.
Assists in the selection, assignment, scheduling, training, and evaluation of custodial staff.
Supports the maintenance of job descriptions and evaluation criteria for all maintenance and custodial personnel.
Interviews and recommends qualified applicants for employment within the Buildings and Grounds department.
Monitors time records for all department staff and collaborates with appropriate administrator(s) to certify salary payments for maintenance and grounds personnel.
Supports in the coordination and arrangement of substitute custodial and maintenance services as required.
Conducts departmental staff meetings and facilitates relevant in-service training.
Facilities Maintenance and Operations
Plans, directs, and oversees a comprehensive preventative maintenance program to ensure all school buildings and grounds are maintained in top condition.
Oversees and monitors building usage, including scheduling and ensuring staffing of building and grounds staff for events held in any district building, whether during school hours or outside of normal hours.
Establishes and administers schedules and procedures for the regular, ongoing custodial and maintenance care of all district facilities.
Conducts regular, detailed inspections of all buildings and grounds to identify needs and establish maintenance and repair schedules.
Oversees all maintenance, repair, and construction projects, ensuring a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
Ensures schools are ready for operations on a day-to-day basis, including adding or adjusting schedules to perform duties such as slow removal.
Participates in decisions related to emergency preparedness, such as actions that may need to be taken to prepare school sites for predicted weather and/or determine the need for school closures.
Ensures HVAC systems are managed and regulated to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure the economical and sustainable use of fuel, water, and electricity.
Develops and implements a system for responding to emergency repair and facility needs, including after-hours events.
Safety, Compliance, and Sustainability
Availability to work beyond the standard work week is required to provide proper supervision and respond to emergent building and environmental events.
Ensures all departmental operations conform to local, state, and federal regulations, including those related to asbestos, hazardous materials, accessibility, and playground safety.
Ensures adherence to all district policies, including health and safety procedures (e.g. the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan).
Supports in coordination with governmental and community agencies to align district operations with broader environmental and sustainability initiatives.
Procurement, Budgeting, and Inventory Management
Prepares and submits annual budget recommendations for the Buildings and Grounds department to the designated supervisor and business office.
Develops and manages an inventory system for all maintenance and custodial equipment and supplies.
Oversees the procurement of all departmental supplies, tools, and equipment, with an emphasis on selecting environmentally sustainable products.
Processes purchase requisitions and vendor payments in accordance with district procedures.

Ensures Compliance: Ensures fidelity and compliance with all Board of Education policies, collective bargaining agreements, administrative procedures, and state/federal laws.

Physical Requirements This position requires the performance of moderate work at times, which may regularly require sitting; use of hands and fingers to handle or feel; and to talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
