Position Summary At Stony Brook Medicine, the Assistant Director of Plant Operations supports the Director in establishing departmental priorities, long‑range strategic goals, and operational performance standards for East Campus facilities. This leadership role is responsible for managing personnel transactions, overseeing departmental budgets, implementing policies and procedures, and supporting financial planning related to long‑term facility operations and capital infrastructure.

The Assistant Director provides operational oversight for critical infrastructure and building systems across the East Campus Health Sciences Center (HSC) and Basic Science Tower (BST). This position exercises a high degree of independent judgment, operates with minimal supervision, and serves as a key liaison with hospital leadership, executive administration, department heads, regulatory agencies, and external vendors.

Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership & Departmental Oversight

Manage assigned staff, supervisors, and departmental budgets across East Campus Plant Operations departments, including Electrical, Plumbing, Structural, Lockshop, Grounds, East Campus HSC/BST Garages

Establish and enforce operational standards to ensure reliability of critical systems.

Oversee staffing levels, scheduling, workforce planning, and personnel transactions including hiring, evaluations, disciplinary actions, and performance management.

Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and healthcare facility requirements.

Preventive & Proactive Maintenance Program

Develop and implement a comprehensive preventive and predictive maintenance program to maximize equipment lifecycle and ensure code compliance.

Monitor infrastructure performance and establish asset management strategies.

Ensure all equipment and systems meet federal, state, local, and healthcare regulatory standards.

Evaluate system performance data and recommend capital improvements when necessary.

Oversee all East Campus service and maintenance contracts.

Evaluate vendor performance and ensure contractual compliance.

Coordinate procurement of materials and services.

Negotiate service standards and ensure cost‑effective contract administration.

Policy Development & Quality Improvement

Review, update, and implement Plant Operations policies and procedures.

Develop quality control initiatives to improve operational efficiency and service delivery.

Standardize departmental processes to align with institutional and regulatory requirements.

Financial Planning & Strategic Support

Assist the Director of Plant Operations in developing financial goals and forecasting long‑term operational costs.

Contribute to budget preparation and capital planning.

Analyze cost trends and recommend strategies for cost containment and operational sustainability.

Communication & Leadership Expectations

Communicate effectively with executive leadership, department administrators, clinical leaders, and external regulatory bodies.

Serve as a senior operational representative for Plant Operations.

Exercise sound judgment and independent decision‑making in high‑pressure healthcare environments.

Provide leadership during emergencies or critical infrastructure events.

Required Qualifications An Associate’s Degree and 7 years of progressive experience in management of a Physical Plant / Facilities Department.

OR

in lieu of a degree, 9 years of progressive experience in management of a Physical Plant / Facilities Department.

Minimum of 5 years of management experience overseeing facility systems including:

Electrical systems, HVAC systems, Plumbing systems, Structural systems, Buildings and grounds.

Demonstrated experience working with regulatory agencies and compliance standards applicable to healthcare or highly regulated facilities.

Experience managing multi‑disciplinary technical teams and operational budgets.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in an academic medical center or complex healthcare environment.

Knowledge of Joint Commission (TJC), DOH, OSHA, NFPA, and other healthcare regulatory requirements.

Experience in capital planning and infrastructure modernization.

Pay Range The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $120,747 - $150,000 / year. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Some positions offer annual supplemental pay such as Location Pay for UUP full‑time positions ($4,000).
