
Director of Finance and FP&A

Our client, a Multi-State Cannabis Company, is seeking a Director of Finance and FP&A to serve as the company's strategic finance leader, responsible for financial planning, analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and accounting across operations.
This is a true strategic partnership role with the CEO and Operations team, providing the financial insights and decision-support frameworks that drive growth.
Desired Candidate Location: Boulder or Denver-Metro Area
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Build annual budgets for operations
- Develop rolling 13-week cash flow forecasts
- Create 3-year strategic financial plan for presentations
- Monthly re-forecasting based on actuals and updated assumptions
Variance Analysis & Reporting:
- Monthly variance analysis (actual vs. budget) with commentary and recommendations
- Weekly flash reports for CEO (revenue, cash, key metrics)
- Identify trends, risks, and opportunities in financial performance
- Translate financial data into actionable business insights for non-finance leaders
Business Partnership:
- Partner with Operations leads on profitability improvement initiatives
- Support Market Operations team on build-out budget and capital planning
- Provide ad-hoc financial analysis for strategic decisions
- Scenario modeling for growth options (new states, product lines, capital raises)
Strategic Finance & Investor Relations
Board & Investor Reporting:
- Prepare monthly board packages (financials, KPIs, strategic updates)
- Quarterly investor updates with financial performance and outlook
- Maintain financial and corporate documentation
- Build and maintain integrated 3-statement financial model (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow)
- Launch financial model: track build-out spend vs. budget, revenue ramp assumptions
- M&A modeling if acquisition opportunities arise
Strategic Planning:
- Contribute to strategic planning: analyze market opportunities, competitive positioning
- Capital allocation recommendations: where to invest for best ROI
- Pricing strategy: product-level profitability analysis
Analytics Infrastructure & KPI Management
Build Analytics Capabilities:
- Develop KPI dashboards for operations
- Implement product-level profitability tracking (by SKU, channel, customer)
- Partner with Operations to define what metrics matter and how to track them
Systems & Tools:
- Implement Distru seed to sale system
- Build Excel/financial models until systems in place (you're not afraid of heavy Excel work)
- Create templates and tools that make finance accessible to operations leaders
Financial Operations Management
- Manage external controller firm relationship: review monthly close, ensure accuracy
- Review monthly financial statements for reasonableness
- Ensure clean books ready for audit and investor review
- Implement basic financial controls and approval workflows
- Cash management: manage and monitor cash position, coordinate with banking relationships
- Insurance and risk management oversight
QUALIFICATIONS
Must-Have Experience
- 5-8+ years in finance, with at least 2-3 years in FP&A or strategic finance
- Built financial models from scratch (3-statement models, scenario analysis, unit economics)
- Experience in high-growth or startup environments where you built infrastructure, not just maintained it
- Strong Excel/financial modeling skills (you're the "Excel expert" in the room)
- Business partnering: Worked closely with operations leaders to drive decisions
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field
Critical Skills
- Strategic thinker: Can zoom out from numbers to see business implications
- Storyteller: Translates complex financial data into clear, actionable narratives for non-finance leaders
- Builder mindset: Comfortable creating from scratch, not just inheriting systems
- Pragmatic: Knows when to build sophisticated model vs. quick back-of-envelope calc
- Self-starter: Can work independently without heavy oversight
- Communication: Can present to board, explain to operations, and train bookkeeper with equal effectiveness
Nice-to-Have
- Cannabis industry experience (though NOT required)
- Multi-state or multi-unit operations financial experience
- Raised capital or supported fundraising process (equity, debt)
- Implemented ERP software
- CPA, CFA, or MBA (not required but valued)
- Experience in highly regulated industries (alcohol, pharma, etc.)
