Sheet Metal Estimator – Prototyping & Short Run Production

Approved Sheet Metal, Boston, MA, United States

Approved Sheet Metal is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Sheet Metal Fabrication Programmer and Estimator with a strong sense of urgency to join our team. This position plays a key role in producing accurate and timely quotes for custom sheet metal parts, assemblies, and components, primarily supporting prototype and short-run production.

In addition to estimating responsibilities, this role is also involved in process planning and programming of manufacturing equipment to ensure parts are produced accurately and efficiently. The ideal candidate has a solid background in sheet metal fabrication, a strong understanding of manufacturing processes, and a customer-focused mindset.

Responsibilities Develop accurate and timely cost estimates for custom sheet metal components and assemblies. This includes reviewing customer RFQs, engineering drawings, 3D models, and specifications to determine material requirements, labor hours, and machine time for operations such as cutting, forming, welding, finishing, and assembly.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration Work closely with engineering, production, and procurement teams to confirm manufacturability and ensure proposed solutions align with shop capabilities.

Customer Communication Prepare and submit quotes to customers and communicate with clients to clarify technical requirements or recommend design‑for‑manufacturability improvements when appropriate.

Manufacturing Process Planning and Programming Create process plans and programs for shop equipment including lasers, punches, and press brakes to support efficient production. This includes developing job routings, creating or updating 3D models, and preparing engineering drawings for production teams.

Support ongoing initiatives aimed at improving estimating accuracy, reducing quote turnaround times, and optimizing manufacturing workflows.

Required Qualifications Experience Minimum of 3 years of experience in programming, estimating, or process planning within a precision sheet metal fabrication environment.

Fabrication Knowledge Strong understanding of fabrication operations including laser cutting, press brake forming, welding, hardware insertion, and finishing.

Technical Skills Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings. Experience programming sheet metal lasers (such as ABE or similar systems) is highly preferred.

Software Experience Familiarity with ERP or quoting platforms such as Fulcrum, JobBOSS, E2, Paperless Parts, or similar systems. CAD experience (SolidWorks or equivalent) is also desirable.

Analytical & Communication Skills Strong analytical, mathematical, and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with both internal teams and customers.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment and manage deadlines with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
